Next summer everyone's favorite radioactive lizard will be stomping across theater screens again. Don't expect another goofy, too-stupid-for-anyone-over-5 mess like Roland Emmerich's disaster from the 90s.
They are going for deadly serious this time, hiring independent director Gareth Edwards (Monster) to add a documentary-style tone to the film.
Good cast this time as well headed by Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) and Elizabeth Olsen (Liberal Arts).
The production company and special effects are being handled by the same team that produced Pacific Rim.
Here is a first teaser trailer: Unfortunately the trailer has been pulled down, it was leaked. The trailer is scheduled to start playing in theaters on Nov 3. The film itself will be out in May.

The teaser looks awesome. A few things seem evident:
#1 - With all the bodies laying around it looks like we'll see some actual carnage this time out. #2 - There is another dead beastie laying on the ground, so some monster vs. monster action could happen. #3 - They are using a variation on the original Godzilla roar #4 - The profile shot of Godzilla looks very much like the classic design.

Yep. Looks like it's going to be done right this time.
I have to say that I didn't mind Emmerich's version too much. It just wasn't a Godzilla film. If you've seen Godzilla:Final Wars, you've seen how the Japanese felt about Emmerich's version.

Those things struck me as well. Can't wait!
007 - I'm a huge fan of the classics, but I'm with you about the Iguana Godzilla. If I think of it as a stand-alone monster, it's a fun movie.

Anyone notice the music played in the trailer is the same Gyorgy Ligeti piece used in The Shining? That helps with the overall ominous tone.
I REALLY hope the film is as dark and ominous as the trailer, I'd like to see Godzilla played 100% serious.

Holy shit.
Gareth Edwards.
Bryan Cranston.
Elizabeth Olson.
These names are the equation for something great. Plus Frank Darabont is co-writing.
BTW I highly recommend Edwards' Monster. It's a fabulous sci-fi that leaves one with a lot to ponder, even though the ending is the weakest sequence. Some ridiculously awe-inspiring effects work on a shoestring budget. Asylum should take notes.

Goyer's taking story credit, so that's more evidence toward a darker route. Of course, Cranston is known for tackling comedic roles, but my guess for his casting is the surprise dark-as-F*ck turn he took on Breaking Bad.

The rest of the cast is good too, including Aaron Taylor Johnson (Kick-Ass), Juliet Binoche, David Strathairn and Ken Watanabe,.
The original story the screenplay was based on was written by David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight). He wanted to write the screenplay as well but had conflicting projects.

Just saw the teaser.
God. Damn.
THIS is how a Godzilla movie should look. I really can't wait for this one.
BTW the piece at the end is Ligeti's Requiem, best known for usage during the Tycho excavation sequence in 2001. What a great piece to employ for a trailer. Gave me chills and genuinely scared me along with the faint image of Godzilla.

I got my Ligeti confused, I thought it was the piece from The Shining.

I saw "Monster" before I knew Edwards was involved in this remake of my alltime favorite monster. I was really impressed with what he was able to accomplish with what was obviously a small budget. I also like that he's sticking with the basic Toho Studio version of Godzilla and not trying to "re-imagine" him. I'm psyched for this one!

I like it. Like you, I like the dark vibe to it; much more true to the original. And my understanding is that there will be other "kaiju" in this one too which only makes it better IMO.
The original "Gojira" is very bleak and depressing as Gojira is basically visiting revenge upon the inhabitants of Japan. I like the concept of a giant monster as the instrument of some cosmic justice. The original Gojira stresses that aspect much more than the Americanized version with Raymond Burr.

This has me pretty psyched as well.I can take my Godzilla in just about any flavor from the serious original "Gojira", (a favorite of movie of mine), to the goofy fun the movie series became later.
Interesting that it's from the same studio that put out Pacific Rim.

I'm with you. All Godzilla is good (including the bizarre Godzilla's Revenge) but the original plays out like a horror story and is the best of the long series.

Seriously though, when I saw this thread I thought No,No,No!!!! Just another excuse for another CGI driven noisefest, but I've got to admit it looks interesting.

I was a bit disappointed in Monsters. Mainly because I didn't really care for the two leads and the fact the trailer for it set up a tough standard to live up to. Technically though the director did a pretty amazing job for such a small budget. Glad he's getting a shot with this.
