Movies are my passion, have been since I first saw Singin' In The Rain when I was 4 years old.  I've spent decades studying films from all eras, but primarily focused on Hollywood and the UK.  I've read probably a hundreds books on filmmaking, countless biographies of directors, cinematographers, producers and stars and of course watched thousands of movies.  I also have friends that work in the industry and I get together with them and talk movies for hours on end anytime I get the chance.

I've basically amassed more knowledge than most people graduating film school I just don't have the degree.  Razz
Nice, I didn't even realize that there were books about directors and actors and such. I know that they exist for comics and comic authors because my dad and brothers read that stuff.

A few that I think are great movies and I always enjoy:

Seven Samurai - I think it's just a masterpiece of film making (as are most Kurosawa films)
Youth of the Beast - an early '60s Japanese gangster flick that I never tire of for some reason
The Killing - an early Stanley Kubrick film that's unlike much of his later work and I always enjoy it
12 Monkeys - always a fan of any Terry Gilliam film and this is one of my favorite Sci-Fi flicks
Ronin - always up for watching this one
The Terminator - the first one is easily my favorite of this series and I love '80s action movies
Escape from New York - there's so much I like about this one, maybe my favorite '80s action flick
Pee-wee's Big Adventure - I never apologize for being a fan of this one, maybe my favorite Burton film
Alien - I like all the Alien movies as each one is a bit different but the first one is so good

I lost all my flavor for Star Wars thanks to the prequels. Pre-episode 1, I would have listed that with the others and even put it right above 2001, but now the whole franchise is just dead to me. There's some hope, though. I recently required the original trilogy on VHS w/no CGI Colorform crap. Gonna check it out soon and see if the love will return.

The prequels don't exist on the Fat Freddy Planet. I went to see "Episode I: The Phantom Menace" like every other good little fanboy, thought it sucked, never bothered with the other two.

That was a smart move. If I would have done the same there may still be a space in my heart for the trilogy. Alas, it is too late now...

The 50s version is awesome. It has one of the first jump scares that I recall seeing (when the one guy opens the door and the Thing is standing there and takes a swing at him). Carpenter's remake is also a classic, one of the few remakes that I truly enjoy as much as the orignal.
.
You might want to check out the cycle of films Val Lewton produced in the 1940s, many modern horror elements can be traced back to those movies...

Cat People (1942)
I Walked With A Zombie (1943)
The Leopard Man (1943)
The Seventh Victim (1943) - one of the first films about a Satanic cult.
The Ghost Ship (1943)
The Curse Of The Cat People (1944)
The Body Snatcher (1945)
Isle Of The Dead (1945)
Bedlam (1946)

I do believe I've only seen I Walked With A Zombie. Very enjoyable.

Black Hole had some killer retro effects work, but the acting was more wooden than the Andromeda Strain. Worst of all, the science was the worst I've ever seen in a movie, especially where our heroes decided to get to another part of the ship by stepping outside and walking along the ship in an exposed vacuum without even a fishbowl for a helmet. Did the filmmakers just throw their hands up in the air at that point and said, "F*ck it we're just gonna have you guys walk in space without suits?"

Regardless, I do own this on one of those ooooold first-gen early 80's clamshell videotapes and like to pull it out from time to time for a smile.

I'm kinda surprised Holy Grail isn't receiving more love in this thread. I know some people don't like Python humor but I thought there were more people on this board that do.

Me too. But then I think almost anything Python is brilliant (except the final season of the series; that has its moments but without the input of the full troupe, I think it suffers pretty badly).

I love 'The Black Hole' too for how bizarre it is. I actually own it in an old blue clamshell VHS from my kid collection of VHS, along with a Spider-Woman cartoon and a few other cool things.

Yeah 'The Holy Grail' is completely brilliant but I figured maybe it was a little too predictable? My question would be who *doesn't* love it.

Ever seen any of Cleese's corporate training videos?

I actually convinced our department manager to show some of these years ago.   This wasn't one of them but it's pretty typical of Cleese's approach:
