| On the suggestion in the "Most Hated Movies!" thread, I decided to start a thread for movies that people actually enjoyed for whatever reason. I am not a "Movie Buff" by any means, and I rarely go to the theater but I do have a few movies that I enjoy and can watch multiple times. What are some of the movies that you enjoy?
1. Water World 2. Airheads 3. The League of Extraordinary Gentleman 4. Batman (1989) 5. Starship Troopers 6. Mad Max (all 3) 7. Undercover Brother 8. Death Race 9. Patriot Games 10. The Patriot
Some honorable mentions would include the Lethal Weapon and Beverly Hills Cop series, the most recent Batman Trilogy and Star Trek movies, one and all.

Some honorable mentions would include the Lethal Weapon and Beverly Hills Cop series, the most recent Batman Trilogy and Star Trek movies, one and all. Some of those are pretty terrible, some of those are really good. Hmmm. Perhaps a poll just kidding here's my list, separated by genre (to combine would just take all day): Sci-Fi: Star Trek 2 Aliens 2001: A Space Odyssey (top film of mine since 1986) Horror: The Descent Evil Dead Dawn of the Dead Romance: Before Sunrise Before Sunset Most likely will be Before Midnight when I get around to seeing it Thriller: Night of the Hunter Peeping Tom Psycho Animation: Wall-E Beauty and the Beast Snow White and the Seven Dwarves Drama: Tokyo Story The Godfather E.T. (I don't count this as sci-fi) Adventure: Robin Hood (Errol Flynn) Mask of Zorro Raiders of the Lost Ark Action: Lethal Weapon Goldfinger Die Hard Classics: Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast Treasure of the Sierra Madre Citizen Kane Gotta throw in Sunset Blvd. Musicals: The Music Man An American in Paris Singing in the Rain Silent: City Lights Flesh and the Devil (Garbo = most beautiful woman other than my wife) The Crowd Comedy: Talladega Nights Superbad Some Like it Hot War: Hamburger Hill Platoon Saving Private Ryan Fantasy: This is a tough one. Most if not all fantasy movies tend to be middle of the road. They always lack something. I'll have to get back to this one later. That's all I can think of for now.

Fantasy: This is a tough one. Most if not all fantasy movies tend to be middle of the road. They always lack something. I'll have to get back to this one later.
That's all I can think of for now. I agree, most fantasy ends up lacking that little something, I guess like forgetting salt when cooking. A little bland. I did enjoy The Lord of the Rings trilogy quite a bit although the jury is still out on The Hobbit. Other than those though, I don't really remember any fantasy flicks off the top of my head that I have seen. I don't see a big difference between Sci-Fy and Fantasy a lot of the time though, unless you are talking Blind Guardian/HammerFall lyrics - Goblins, Orcs, Faeries, Wizards and such. The Sword in the Stone is a good fantasy movie I guess, and Shrek would qualify I have not seen An American in Paris, although I want to.

| I'll have to come back when I have time and post a list of 10,000 or so titles. I could probably come up with over 100 and not even get out of the 1930s. |

The Alan Quartermain movie, is that one also based on The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen graphic novel? I have never heard of that one.

So are movies a hobby then or more of a career thing? Movies are my passion, have been since I first saw Singin' In The Rain when I was 4 years old. I've spent decades studying films from all eras, but primarily focused on Hollywood and the UK. I've read probably a hundreds books on filmmaking, countless biographies of directors, cinematographers, producers and stars and of course watched thousands of movies. I also have friends that work in the industry and I get together with them and talk movies for hours on end anytime I get the chance. I've basically amassed more knowledge than most people graduating film school I just don't have the degree. |

Good point. I meant Carpenter's remake. I always forget that 50s one because it's so different from Carpenter's vision. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

Good point. I meant Carpenter's remake. I always forget that 50s one because it's so different from Carpenter's vision. The 50s version is awesome. It has one of the first jump scares that I recall seeing (when the one guy opens the door and the Thing is standing there and takes a swing at him). Carpenter's remake is also a classic, one of the few remakes that I truly enjoy as much as the orignal. And for right now , let me add one of the greatest comedies ever made....Caddyshack ! I still quote this movie quite a bit.

You might want to check out the cycle of films Val Lewton produced in the 1940s, many modern horror elements can be traced back to those movies... Cat People (1942) I Walked With A Zombie (1943) The Leopard Man (1943) The Seventh Victim (1943) - one of the first films about a Satanic cult. The Ghost Ship (1943) The Curse Of The Cat People (1944) The Body Snatcher (1945) Isle Of The Dead (1945) Bedlam (1946) |

| some that I forgot to add to my list are the Marx Brothers and Abbott and Costello movies. One of my all time favorites is Abbott and Costello meet the Wolfman and The Marx Brothers Duck Soup. Of the entire comedy genre, the classics had it in spades, and the majority of stuff now just does not hold up. The last comedy that I literally laughed out loud to was Demolition Man (yeah, I know, Sci-Fi) and Liar Liar. | |
