But it's about as "schlocky" as it gets from that era.

I know how you can make it a LOT more schlocky.
Oh believe me, my DVD stack is not lacking in schlock... I just haven't had much time to watch as much as I usually would during this month!!

Evil Bong 2 or Gingerdead Man.
I'm still recovering from seeing the first "Evil Bong," I am not sure if I could handle another dose
My brother will be loaning me a horror DVD pack with "Gingerdead Man" on it next time I see him, but I don't know if that'll happen before the month's out.

"Superman Unbound" (2013)
Superman and his cousin Kara (aka Supergirl) defend Earth from an invasion by the robotic planet-destroyer Brainiac in this installment of the DC Animated Universe series. Lotsa action packed robot crushin' fun, nicely animated as usual, with great voice work (incl. Stana Katic of 'Castle' fame as Lois Lane).

Pacific Rim
Boy did I hate this movie! I wouldn't have thought it was possible to make a movie featuring fights between giant robots and giant monsters boring but they accomplished that. Plus all the fight scenes were either in the dark, amid a lot of smoke or underwater; the old Godzilla movies have better monster fight action. Lastly, the design of the kaiju themselves seemed like it was an afterthought. When you could actually see them, the kaiju all looked like variations on the basic Predator monster.
This was a major disappointment to me.

What did you think of the visual effects of this ? Just curious since they're doing the Godzilla flick next year.

Killer Joe - billed as a dark comedy, it fails miserably on the comedy aspect. It's certainly dark though. Matthew McConaughey is over-the-top creepy. And Gina Gershon has a huge beaver.

I wasn't all that impressed but that might be because, as I said, all the fight scenes where so dark and poorly lit it was hard to tell what was going on half the time.

Well, hopefully that's not the case with Godzilla, then.

Pacific Rim is one of those films that proves how much well-written characters, intelligent dialogue and engaging plotting are more important than special effects. Because everything in the film was basically a cliche and every character was a cardboard stereotype you never fully engage with what is happening in the film. You are left with some special effects sequences that are impressive but without a story or realistic characters you might as well just play a video game instead.
I didn't hate the movie but in the end it was basically a whole bunch of style with zero substance. The most interesting character in the film was the young pilot played by Rinko Kikuchi but about halfway through the movie they just drop developing the character any further in favor of wall to wall action sequences.
I expected a lot more from Del Toro.

The Way, Way Back (2013)
Low-key coming of age tale, well acted by the two young leads. Sam Rockwell steals every scene he's in. This was one of the real sleeper hits this summer, it played for over 2 months at the independent theater in my neighborhood.
