| We all have them, those albums that we thought were great but the reviewers. and record buying public didn't agree with you. Do you mutter under your breath that Chinese Democracy was the best thing that G & R ever did? Or that there is only one Exodus singer and that's Rob Dukes, or that Risk is the only Megadeth album that didn't hurt your ears. Well this is the thread for you, a chance vent your frustration for every time your beloved record has been described as sub par or worse 'Average!' I have loads of these but I'll just post one, the big one! The one that makes my blood boil every time i hear about how great the first six Black Sabbath albums are (which they are) but what about album Number 7!! I can honestly say that I have had this record on my turntable more than any other Sabbath disc over the last 12 months (including 13) and it's a classic, brilliant songs, brilliant playing (Iommi is immense on this record as is Bill) but very little love and I was shocked to see how many had this bottom of their Ozzy era Sabbath list. So that's mine, I thought it might be interesting to find out yours. | |

| A few that come immediately to mind:
Anthrax: State of Euphoria. Can't figure out why this one is so dismissed and Among the Living so praised. Spreading the Disease and Persistence of Time are superior, but State of Euphoria is dang good.
Deep Purple: The Battle Rages On. Like it as much as the other Mark II reunion discs.
Slayer: Diabolous in Musica. It sounds like Slayer. It rocks. End of story.
Judas Priest: Turbo. I like it. I don't know why.
Iron Maiden: The Final Frontier. I love it and find it to have plenty of memorability. New Maiden RULES.
I'm sure I'll think of some more later.

Motley Crue-S/T Motley Crue-Quaternary Megadeth-Risk VH III Extreme-Waiting For The Punchline
I'm sure I'll think of more. I really dig Technical Ecstasy.

| Critics and heavy metal have never mixed, like oil and water. Just look at Rolling Stone. Those guys give Priest's Screaming for Vengeance two stars out of five. Two stars out of five. I like the way Scott does his reviews. He tends to look past weaknesses and praise the artist for their strength alone, which makes the album more attractive.
My list is too long. Agreed with Sabbath's Tech and Maiden's Frontier. And of course Corabi's Crue.

| Metallica - St Anger (The lyrics & some of James emo vox were kind of silly, but I enjoyed the music very much. I also love that trash can drum sound.)
Suicidal Tendencies - Suicidal for Life (All I ever hear is "Too much cursing". Big deal, I curse more than that. The album smokes!)
Slayer - Diabolus in Musica (Call it nu-metal if you want to, I don't care. Sonofabitch is heavy!)
L.A. Guns - American Hardcore (I always appreciate when bands try to get heavier. I thought they pulled it off rather well. No one else did though.)
Demolition Hammer - Time Bomb (Why does everyone freak out when bands add groove? This was one heavy motherf*cker. Still is. Not the ripping speedfest Epidemic was, but just as great in an opposite way.)

I like the songs despite the poor mix and production.

| Every Metallica album released has been enjoyable. All except Reload and St. Anger are fantastic.
Besides Holy Diver, none of Dio's solo albums are as good as any of the ones he done with Sabbath or Rainbow.
Iron Maiden's last 4 albums are every bit as good as most of their 80's stuff.
Rage Against The Machine are a good band.
I'd take a guitarist with soul like Slash or Buddy Guy over a soulless shredder like Yngwie Malmsteen any day.
Anvil are among the worst songwriters and lyricists in metal and have somehow been successfully pumping out the same mindless garbage for 30 years. Seem like nice guys though.
Sabbath's newest album is as good as Sabotage or Vol 4. As my Iron Maiden point, some people's nostalgia seems to make suggesting this blasphemy.
95% of underground bands are underground for a reason.

| Stuff I like the most usually ranges out of common favorites, so it would be too long of a list -Fates Warning's Parallels and Inside Out (hell, whole Alder era) destroys anything John Arch has ever made. -DT's When Dream and Day Unite is better than their whole discography combined. -Fifth Angel's Time Will Tell is better than the s/t. -Iron Maiden from Brave New World + SIT is better than classic Maiden -Black Sabbath became listenable in 1980, and every Dio and Martin album is better than their classics. -Malmsetten sucks as a songwriter. -Pink Floyd's MLoR and Division Bell are great. -Metallica's Load is a great album. -Queensryche's Rage for Order is miles better than Mindcrime and Empire - I do like them all. Promised Land is great. Last Ryche album(s) is meh. -Dio's Sacred Heart surpasses Holy Diver and Last in Line, so does Dream Evil. -Mike Howe era is the one that made Metal Church stand out for me and made the band special, not Wayne's. - - ElectricEye wrote:

Actually, most people seem to like the album - less people don't like it. It is a excellent album. And I do think the last four albums have been as good as the classics. It's only been over the past couple of years that people are starting to say Brave New World is as good as the classics, but it's been out for 13 years and has stood the test of time.

I could go in that direction if we said 'No Exit' which is my favorite FW record. 2. Absolutely. 3. Yes, and far better than the follow up. 4. RFO is a masterpiece, but I'd say on par with 'Mindcrime', just two different worlds. Certainly blows away 'Empire'. Both records are such defining statements in metal. A lot of people complain about Royal Hunt without DC Cooper, but 'Paradox II' with Boals and most of the John West stuff, 'Paper Blood' especially, is all fantastic. Some think 'Perfect Man' is the only thing Rage put out in the 80's and forget about 'Execution Guaranteed' which is easily in the school of stuff like 'Peace Sells' and 'Hall of the Mountain King', and then 'Secrets In A Weird World' is an amazing, speed metal, slightly proggy follow up, with one of the best guitar tones I've ever heard. I think 'Defenders of the Faith' is a better record than 'Painkiller' and it shouldn't get shot down all the time because of the production mud.

| I don't mind Megadeth's Risk at all. In fact I like it better than the supposed "return to form" album that followed it (The World Needs A Hero).
I also dig such generally-hated albums as Judas Priest's Jugulator, Dokken's Shadowlife and Warrant's Ultraphobic.

I guess I'll be the "one against the world" and say that I find Malmsteen really underrated as a songwriter.

| Celtic Frost's Cold Lake. Despite how they looked and the poppy Cherry Orchards the album still had some of the trademark Celtic Frost style. This album was just CF continuing to do some experimenting musically. | |

I think 'Defenders of the Faith' is a better record than 'Painkiller' and it shouldn't get shot down all the time because of the production mud. RFO is, well you know, perfect, and it flows great while there are parts I could live without on Mindcrime. Perfect Man I always viewed as the weakest of their 88-94 era. Completly agree with DotF. Love it, and its the only Priest album I come back to from time to time.

The first time I Judas Priest was the Defenders Of The Faith tour in Casper Wyoming. Fantastic live show from a fantastic album. I have a special bond with that album.

| DotF is only a little less stellar than SFV. The Sentinel is the most intense heavy metal song every written by a mainstream band. I do wish the production was more like SFV, but it's a minor complaint. bassman, I heard that tour was their best of the decade.
But God, I hate Turbo. Hate hate hate.

But God, I hate Turbo. Hate hate hate. The 2nd time I seen Priest was on the Turbo tour in Denver. Great album great show. But not as good as the DotF Tour & album. Plus in 86 I was smoking A Lot of weed. That made thing kinda hazy for a couple years.
