| I don't disagree in the essential nature of most of the stuff listed but for me personally I'm a bigger fan of a lot of the groups other albums. From Boris' list I'd go with The Pixies - Bossanova, Belly - King, Smashing Pumpkins - Gish, and Iggy Pop - Brick By Brick. Just my own personal preference.
Three from the alternative rock late 80s/early 90s that I'll add
The La's - s/t
The story behind the album and the implosion of the group alone makes this a must have. Oh yeah, the music is incredible too. Was lucky enough to see them live at a festival before it all went to hell for them.
The Replacements - Don't Tell A Soul
I know as a 'Mats fan you're supposed to hate this. I've always loved it and it remains my clear favorite of theirs.
Connells - Fun & Games
If you have any interest in alt-rock from this era get this record now. One of my all-time favorites.

| I'm not seeing much of anything on these lists that I need to hear or must have. I could go the rest of my life without hearing another Springsteen or U2 song and be just fine with it. Reggae? Rap? Pass. And this one? I don't see this one as a "must have". Maybe if I'm donning my pantaloons and mounting my steed to storm the castle and rescue a fair maiden. Since that doesn't happen much in the big city, pass. Guess I like my hard rock & metal too much. I'll dip my toes in some blues or jazz if I want to expand my palate. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. | I recently dug out my old Bryan Adams collection of his first five albums:
Bryan Adams You Want it You Got it Cuts Like a Knife Reckless Into the Fire
I played them back in the day until my ears bled.
Not into anything after the 5th album, but man do I love Bryan Adams.

I live near Birmingham England and we do this every week! Castle storming, maiden rescuing Tuesdays we call it. You've reminded me to iron my Pantaloons ready I think that all of the albums on my must have list are must have, that's why I have them. I'm not trying to convince anyone else, it's just cool to see what people on here love, when the're not listening to metal A few more Rancid - Out Come the Wolves Massive Attack - Mezzanine Prodigy - Music For the Jilted Generation Nouvelle Vague - Nouvelle Vague The Cult - Love Lenny Kravitz - Let Love Rule

| Well, my exposure to English culture is pretty much limited to Monty Python and Benny Hill, so I just assume that's what you folks do. It's not like my musical tastes are all-metal-all-the-time. Far from it. But I'd say that 90% of my collection is guitar-based hard rock & metal. The stuff I own outside of that realm, while I like it, doesn't strike me as "must haves" for other people. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. Ahhh, different perspectives. See, I took it as just the opposite. Like when we do the "Must-have albums every metalhead should own" type of thing. Eh tomato, to-mah-to. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too.

| Well, I tried to pick one that was both and a favorite AND something I think would be a great introductory kind of album, and a milestone type of thing, but at the same time all someone has to say is "I don't like jazz/fusion, I never will, I won't give it a chance" and then that would mean what I recommended is not must-have. so... | |

Don't have the same list, but would include several of the same artists. I'd swap out File Under Easy Listening for Copper Blue for Sugar (truthfully I'd be more inclined to list Mould's solo records Workbook or Black Sheets Of Rain - but all good IMO). Happy Days for the Catherine Wheel. Hey Babe for Juliana Hatfield. Green Mind for Dinosaur Jr (their new one is great). And Bubble & Scrape for Sebadoh would be my personal picks. Fables Of Reconstruction has become my favorite REM record by a mile.
