One of my favorites has always been Stetsasonic. They played their instruments and put on an amazing live show.

I love rap up until the mid nineties. Once it became all about the studio production and not the DJ/MC I lost interest quick. My biggest regret is not upgrading my rap tapes to CD back before all the classic stuff became so pricey. Someday I'll find 7A3 or MC Twist for under the hundred plus bucks those go for.

I liked some hip hop when I was younger but it was your usual suspects N.W.A., Public Enemy, early Run DMC, Beastie Boys ( personally I don't consider them hip hop) but even then I was not a major fan.

I appreciate it as an art form, but I am not well versed enough in the genre to have a strong opinion either way, plus most the artist I am familiar with, are from over 20 years ago.

And like I said, it seems like that's what you typed. You don't think saying "I am a musican first and that is the basis of my not caring for it much" seems like you're saying it's not music? Why point out that you're a musician then?

fair enough

My experiences with the medium didn't involve actual musicians performing together. They had to have a "drummer" program the drum machne for them. (ME) I didn't hear any other aspect of the song. sampled or otherwise. I copied what came from one of the individuals mouth, measure by measure. Thus gave a foundation for any kind of arrangement that was created afterwards. My friend recorded sampled and "boxed" instrumentation along with the rhymes of the three individuals and that is what the finished product consisted of.

My opinion is based on my personal expeerience, one which I was payed 250 bucks for my troubles. In my point of view, the lack of musicians gives me a dislike for it. That certainly doesn't mean I believe it isn't music. Just like I don't care for "blast beats" cause it takes an important element away from playing. Doesn't mean I believe it's not drumming or is easy to do.

Although it is only somewhat on topic to old school rap/hip-hop, I won a free pair of Beats by Dr. Dre at work a couple of days ago. They sound awesome.

Some rap is ok, but it is not a genre that I tend to listen to, primarily because I don't want my kids repeating the lyrics. I was into Too$hort, Sir-Mix-a-Lot, West-Side Connection, Ice Cube, Young MC, DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince, Run-DMC, Etc.

Recently, my brother turned me on to MC Lars and his lyrics are pretty kid friendly and he features Paul Gilbert on one track. My kids love listening to him so I have some MC Lars in the van on regular rotation.

One of my all-time favorites is the Beastie Boys Paul's Boutique from 1989. Played that album to death, and still love it today. And maybe not so old-school, but Wu-Tang's Enter the 36 Chambers from 1993 is ridiculously awesome to listen to. The thing is, I was into rap/hip-hop as a kid before I got into metal and such things, I just can't identify with what it has become today.

As ever, for true genius you gotta go to Canada! lol!

I prefer hip hop like this or the Beastie Boys that sample great music that would never get anywhere near a pop audience to the more obvious choices.

Dream Warriors were so under-rated. And in a lot of ways were so much more consistent than say the more hyped De La Soul.

I was so disappointed when that came out. Really today I have no idea why. It took me near twenty years before I "got it". The remaster was well done and has great liner notes. A true classic that doesn't sound dated at all.

For me that is the "game over" rap record. The last rap record I really loved.

Since I grew up and still live in Memphis, rap/hip-hop is noticeable. I still like Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, EPMD, Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest, Del. Current stuff is limited to The Roots, Nas, Mos Def, and Dälek.

I just never got into the entire "gangsta rap" from the late 80s/early 90s. Especially when growing up I saw friends do a literal 180. And the "crunk" sound that Three 6 and Li'l Jon introduced, they can take it back.

Those are the only two rap/hip-hop artists I get into. They're both pretty original, and I think that's what appeals to me.

Jstate, you know what I think you will love along with people here who are into jazz/instrumentals? It's called El Michels Affair - Enter the 37th Chamber, really cool instrumental covers of Wu-Tang tunes:

As far as Old-School? Public Enemy, Run-DMC, Big Daddy Kane, Boogie Down Productions, Ice Cube, N.W.A, early Snoop Dogg, Pharcyde, Wu-Tang Clan (among my favorites in all of music) and most of their solo stuff, 2Pac, B.I.G., Big Pun, early LL Cool J, Digable Planets, Cypress Hill, Eric B. & Rakim, SLick Rick, Nas, Kurtis Blow, EPMD, Grandmaster Flash, there's a lot >.>

Off and on, yeah. He jumped on the nu-metal thing in the late 90s. Nothing "mind blowin'" (see what I did there?), but it wasn't bad.

lol!

I totally dig that song! Haha. Anyway, he did another album called Bi-Polar which was half nu-metal stuff and half hip hop.

Again, not bad at all. To these ears, anyway. Everyone else here will shit all over it.

Anyway, he's got another album after Bi-Polar, which I don't own. Beyond that, the dude is into some real-estate stuff. Got a TV show about flipping houses or something, too.

And you'll all laugh, but according to Forbes he's estimated to be worth around $20 million.

I was just reading about his house-flipping TV show in Entertainment Weekly a couple of weeks ago. Supposedly he's made more $$ in real estate than he ever did in music.

His Mind Blowin album is actually really good. Anyone else releases that and it would've been still talked about. Say what you will about him (and really his poor career decisions ahem Cool As Ice) but he wasn't without rap skills.
