TERRIBLE drummer choice!

There are so many guys who would've been great in this band. They chose one of the most boring hard rock drummers around.

I can't imagine whose bright idea this was.

Sabbath hasn't made a good drummer choice since Bill left after recording and doing a partial tour for "Heaven and Hell". IMHDO, of course

I stand corrected.

Havn't listened to that Tony Martin fronted things for years.

I kinda/sorta consider them Tony Iommi solo albums for some reason, even though they are not.

Every drummer they've had since Tony Martin joined the band is much better than this guy.

They'd be hard-pressed to find one more utterly BORING.

I do too. You don't really get the authentic Sabbath sound unless you have Tony & Geezer together. Not dissing the Tony Martin albums in any way, but I consider it Sabbath-lite.

Rick Rubin probably suggested him. Another poor decision.

The drummer choice is odd - I'm sure it had to do with the Rick Rubin connection...... What are the odds that Rubin takes the loudness wars to the next level with this release?

I think that I've heard Toni Iommi say the same thing, lets face it, it wasn't Sabbath. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't Sabbath.

As for the drummer, I just think that Ozzy should grow a pair, tell Sharon to butt out and get Bill. How many more chances will they get!

BLACK SABBATH has set "13" as the title of its new album. The group's first album with Ozzy Osbourne since 1978 will be released in June via Vertigo/Universal Republic in the U.S. and Vertigo in all other territories. The drum tracks on the CD were laid down by RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE sticksman Brad Wilk following original drummer Bill Ward's decision to bow out of the reunion.

Osbourne, Tony Iommi (guitar) and Geezer Butler (bass) recorded the album primarily in Los Angeles with producer Rick Rubin.

That is a terrible album title.

Although I wouldn't call it terrible, I would say it's very unoriginal. That's the best they could come up with ?

it is in the sense that Megadeth just used it.

Well, that's an interesting choice of drummer I guess. I'm only familar with his work in Audioslave. Lame title though. That's the best they could come up with? At least Megadeth spelled it out with wacky characters.

To the people that think Sharon is behind the hiring of Brad Wilk: SHARON HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT.

Tommy Clufetos was originally going to play drums on the new album, but Rick Rubin and the guys in Sabbath didn't think Tommy's drumming style fit the music. The band decided to look for someone else. There were several different drummers auditioned before they chose Brad.

Yes indeed a better choice could have been made! They could just stop the bs garbage and just bring Bill back in as he is supposed to be!!! But oh well, its better than Ozzy's drummer by a long shot.

For those that keep bringing Sharon into this, Sharon has NOTHING to do with Black Sabbath. She manages Ozzy and that is all.

I'd wager she was part of the negotiations as to what the drummer chosen is gonna be compensated for his time. As management for all parties involved should be. So that may not exactly be true.

Right, she manages Ozzy. Who is also in Black Sabbath. So do you honestly think she's not making this her business? I'd love to be a fly on the wall during all of the negotiations and count how many times Sharon has threatened to pull Ozzy out of all of this if her demands weren't met.

I'm glad they didn't go with that Clueless fella, but how do you know this info? I'd like to think the guys in Sabbath had a say in who their drummer is going to be, but has this been stated as fact somewhere? Just wonderin'

I would not be surprised if Sharon's involvement, as Ozzy's manager, is "Ozzy gets X% or we walk", which means the others take what's left. Tony & Geezer agreed, Bill did not. So, in that case she would not have directly fired anyone...just not budged from what (in her mind) Ozzy requires.

Although it would be a hoot to let Ozzy walk into meetings and let him negotiate things for himself.

This is conjecture central in this thread.

I'll play along.

Royalties from album sales will most likely be a 3-way split between Iommi, Butler & Ozzy. Brad Wilk will get paid flat union scale as a session player.

Rubin will get a salary as producer and a percentage of the album sales (this is standard).

The real money lies in the publishing, so whoever gets songwriting credits will make the most money. It was stated online months ago that Iommi/Butler wrote all the music and Butler wrote all the lyrics. In the original run of Sabbath songwriting was credited to "Black Sabbath" so all 4 members got an equal share (this helped Ozzy and Bill who had minimal creative input). Whether Ozzy gets listed in the songwriting credits remains to be seen but that would be just about the only place Sharon could negotiate on his behalf.

The album is being recorded in Los Angeles so it makes sense they held drummer rehearsals here prior to the start of recording, of course the band would have been involved in who was selected. Wilk is not a flashy player but he's rock solid and actually has a little bit of swing to his style, he reportedly studied jazz drumming at some point so that would make him a little more akin to Ward in that respect.

If I was producing the record and had to find a replacement for Ward I probably would have looked outside the rock world entirely for a drummer. Most likely a jazz player like Stanton Moore, Billy Martin (Medeski, Martin & Wood) or Zak Najor (Greyboy All-Stars) to be able to more accurately capture the vibe of the original lineup.

Could you image the stink that would cause in the "metal" community if a non-rock guy was hired to play drums for Sabbath? For starters, the servers for Blabbermouth would burst into flames from all the indignant 14 year olds. Laughing very hard

Iommi is pretty smart dude and doubt he would give Ozzy more then his fair percentage, I am also sure Ozzy got songwriting credits to get a piece of the publishing, which was what the original band did anyway, even if their contribution to the songwriting was minimum.
