For the first time in a long time (can't remember the last), I turned the TV off and read a book instead.

I liked it, I expected it to be "effects over plot" based on the previous films the director has done (300 looked great, but it's a stupid movie). The overall downbeat nature of the film surprised me and I think I actually enjoyed it more because of that.
The story idea was very straight forward so I don't think it really needed much elaboration. It was essentially a study in mood interspersed with huge fantasy/action sequences.

Me too. Didn't dislike it but wanted so bad to love it.
Yo! The Story Of MTV Raps
Surprisingly honest telling of the show's history. It gave a lot of focus to the early days and the cultural impact it had. Unfortunately it also focused too much on Ed Lover & Dre for my tastes. Those two always annoyed me. Glad to see Rakim get his due and that E.S.T. (from the most criminally under-rated rap group Three Times Dope) got a lot of talking head time.

Terminally silly but enjoyable spoof of the old series and of action movies in general. There is a great running gag with things "not" exploding while being damaged in a car chase. Hill and Tatum both shine and Ice-Cube is hilarious as their boss. Worth a rental.

Thankfully my Redbirds are off tonight so I'm watching WWE Raw. And it's still pretty lame but easier on my heart than watching a 19 inning Cardinals game that they end up losing.

Finished "Deranged".
I'd love to know which movie actually was thought up first, this or Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Both were released in 1974 according to ImDB.com and both were based on the antics of Ed Gein. There are definite similarities in both films: meal with corpses, girl in a bag in a pickup truck, face masks made from human skin...etc. But from what I've read, "Deranged" adheres more closely to Ed Gein's real life whereas TCM added/embellished a lot.

"Smokey and the Bandit" (1977)
Burt Reynolds is "Bandit" in one of the all time great car chase films. He's one half of a legendary outlaw trucker team challenged to transport a load of bootleg beer from Texas to Georgia, with a crazed redneck sheriff (Jackie Gleason) in hot pursuit the entire way.
I absolutely loved this movie when I was a kid, and hadn't seen it in probably 30 years till tonight. I'll admit that it hasn't aged very well and the car stunts, which were amazing for their time, have been outdone by countless films since, but Gleason is a total hoot and "Smokey" is still a fun redneck ride that entertained my inner 8 year old.
Revelation while viewing: Sally Field (who plays a runaway bride that Reynolds picks up along the way) had a great ass in 1977.

Sally Field was the ultimate "girl next door" in the 70s, mega-cute with just the right amount of sexiness thrown in.

I still love the Smokey & The Bandit series! They get aired every know and then on TV here, and I try to catch as much of them as I can, every time.
