What is it that you find so wrong with metalcore? All it is is a more contemporary form of metal (I'm talking about bands like Killswitch Engage and All that Remains btw, not bands like Bring me the Horizon and Black Veil Brides). Also, do you consider bands like Prong and Soulfly nu metal?

Prong and Soulfly are most definitely NOT nu-metal.

Soulfly and Fear Factory are often mistakenly called nu-metal. Never heard Prong refered to as that though.

As for the "what is it that you find so wrong with metalcore" part of the original post, that's easy. Same thing I find so wrong with death metal; "WOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGH!!!!!!!!" vocals.
I need vocals that carry a melody, not vokills that just shout, scream, growl, shriek or otherwise eschew melody.

avantgarde black metal is "a more contemporary form of metal." metalcore, like nu metal, is a genre that, while borrowing from metal, also generously borrows from other sources and does not ultimately conform to the metal paradigm. what is "wrong" with it? well, its a perversion. some people can handle that and some people cant. i think it can be done tastefully, a la zao, but that is the great minority of efforts, a lost heritage, and still not metal. i do not listen to nu metal, prong, or soulfly, so i cant answer your second question.

15 years ago the term "nu-metal" made sense. Literally new metal with street spelling (and sometimes random capitalization - eg. \"thebandthatshallneverbementionedagain\").
Is it offiicial now that the name of the genre has stuck? The movement will forever be known as nu-metal, generations from now? Just like new age music, I guess. Or NWOBHM. People will be saying "oh, nu-metal, that's like that real old classic rock, stuff my great grandpa used to listen".

Most of it I find mundane. Where's the guitar solos? I do like a couple nu groups like Shinedown and Shadows Fall.

That's what I like about metalcore, it allows melody on many different parts. It's like one of the more appealing forms of metal, something not liked just by underground metal listeners.

Shinedown is nu-metal? Not in my book; they're "modern metal" to me. No Cookie Monster vokills.
And I really like Shinedown.

Eh, different strokes and all that. I don't like it and you do. You asked and I answered. It's all good.

I will add that one band that I like that I think falls into the nu-metal category is Avenged Sevenfold. At least from CIty Of Evil onward; before that there was too much Cookie vokills.

As far as metalcore, I just find much of it boring. Boring riffs, breakdowns in place of guitar solos, monotonous cookie-cutter vocals, angry-at-the-world lyrics...etc.
Nu-metal. Hmmm...I like a handful of bands. Can't stand a lot of the white-guy-with-backwards-baseball-cap rap style nu-metal. It's terribly mundane IMO. Also it's another style that generally lacks guitar solos.
From what I remember, Soulfly's first album was pretty 'nu-metal'-ish sounding. I've recently heard clips of other albums and they sound much better to me. I'm actually hoping to score some more Soulfly in the future.

I agree, I'm not too keen on bands like Limp Bizkit. At least bands like Slipknot, Disturbed, and Mushroomhead actually sound metal.

I do enjoy Disturbed. Again, it's the vocals that differentiate them from other "nu-metal" bands for me.

So, metal genres experts, how to classify these bands? I really like that sound, but have no idea what are they and what bands should I look for.
Adrenaline Mob also?

I find most Metalcore to be boring mostly due to the lack of solos. They always seemed like bands that wanted to be thrash but didn't have the talent for it.
Nu-Metal is repellent. I hate the melding of Rap with Metal but I especially hate the ethos that it espouses. Poor pitiful me - boo-hoo nonsense. At lease most Metal embraces a masculine ethos that is generally positive.

I like some nu-metal bands. I like Disturbed, Saliva, Slipknot, and Linkin Park (first two albums only). There are other nu-metal bands who i wont change the station if they come on the radio (sevendust, godsmack), but it just doesnt have the same feel as old school metal, and it has way too much "manufactured angst" (as saliva said in "click click boom", "my mom and dad were perfect, but you dont hear any crying from me, like there seems to be on everybodys cd")

I happen to enjoy metalcore, but I only actively listen to a few bands, like Killswitch Engage and Shadows Fall. There are a ton of metalcore bands out now but it's a flooded market and a lot of it is derivative, kind of like the melodic death metal scene in the earlier 2000s. At the time I picked up a lot of cds but eventually got tired of a lot of them, tending to just keep the more innovative bands' albums.
As for nu-metal, I like a little of it, but not most of it. Occasionally I like to listen to Sevendust, but I get tired of their sound after a little while. I'm not sure if System of a Down is nu-metal, or what exactly they are, but I love their stuff and never get tired of them. They're way more experimental than most bands, which is probably part of the reason I like them so much.

By my definition, both of those would be "modern metal". The first band is especially easy to classify in my world because there are no growling vocals. The second band is closer to what I consider "nu-metal" but I still hear the melody in the singer's vocals (for me, raspy vocals are different from Cookie vocals).
Thanks for posting those by the way. I've never heard of either band but I like both those songs.

I like Nu-Metal and Metalcore bands for the most part, the lack of guitar solos isn't really an issue for me, not every band needs to have them.

Saw Adrenaline Mob mentioned. Love the debut:
A lot of metal fans don't like AM because of the nu-metal influence (though unlike nu, there are guitar solos) and simple songwriting, but I have no such hang ups. Plus Allen's rough yet melodic voice fits the songs perfectly and there is plenty of melody amongst the songs.

I quite like that second song. Like you said, rough yet melodic vocals.
Need to investigate further.
EDIT: On second listen, there's nothing wrong with that first AM track either.
