I tried to like Voyager but the vocals kill it for me.

Here's a band I'd kind of forgotten about until I fished the CD out recently - Dan Swano's Nightingale. I only have one album, but I'm not sure why I never got any more as this is some good stuff.

Nightingale is brilliant. Buy them all, man!

Believe me, I really want to. I'm just a little strapped for cash at the moment and there are so many other CDs I want as well. But Nightingale's definitely come back on to my radar.
I really liked Alive Again: The Breathing Shadow Part IV, so maybe I should seek more as well.
You should, man. Be wary of The Breathing Shadow, the first album, as it's very different than the others. Dan recorded that album by himself in his bedroom. While all the other albums are hard rock, somewhat progressive, the debut is very goth rock.
It's a great album, though, just very different. And he re-recorded most of the songs for Nightfall Overture, and they sound wicked! So you get the best of both worlds. =)

Re-recording:
Unbelievably, the Nightfall Overture album was limited to 500...and it was available for years. YEARS! So sad that such a great band can't sell 500 copies. =(
I like goth so that's not a bad thing. I also like some of his work with his progressive death band, Edge Of Sanity (I have Crimson I & II-not familiar with the rest).

Edge of Sanity was brilliant. Definitely check out the other albums, even those he wasn't on, if you ever come across them. Not easy to come by cheap, though.
And if you haven't already, you should definitely check out his solo album, Moontower, which is progressive death metal, but his vocals aren't super-heavy:
It's a brilliant album. You also need to check out his Odyssey project. Originally a three-song EP, but it's recently been remastered and re-released with seven newly-recorded cover tracks, all of which kick ass.
Thanks for the suggestions Eyesore. And you're right about the price of Edge Of Sanity albums. Crimson I and II both cost $15 used.

I'm no connaisseur of this genre in particular but on the prog front I'm huge on Symphony X ("Twilight in Olympus", "The Divine Wings of Tragedy" and "V" in particular) and Evergrey ("Recreation Day" and "Inner Circle").

This thread deserves an update. So here it is:
This one is outstanding. The vocalist is very different for this kind of style, but he's got a brilliant voice. Kind of reminds me of a more "normal" version of the guy from Behind The Curtain, who has a really strange style.
The lone Behind The Curtain album, an old Sensory Records release, is worth finding, too. Although the singer's voice does take some getting used to and probably won't appeal to everyone.

I can't listen right now, but I will when I get home. The album art looks pretty sweet for sure.

I don't have that Mystery album yet, but I have their previous one (One Among The Living), which I really enjoyed. I wouldn't classify them as metal, but they're a good prog band nonetheless.

true - they may not be exactly metal but close enough.

I can handle the Affector about a song at a time too much of it and it gets boring. Just me, just saying.
