The rest of my used-CD dumpster dive at GoHastings.com arrived yesterday...
Alice Cooper - TRASH ($1.49) Alice Cooper - HEY STOOPID ($2.49) AC/DC - BLACK ICE ($1.49 - and it was still sealed!)

Huge Alice fan but those are not his best albums but you can't beat the price, plus Alice is so likable even his material that is not that strong is still likable

I used to have both of those Alice albums on cassette back in the day (I saw Alice live during the HEY STOOPID tour too) and liked'em both, we'll see how well (or not) they've aged when I spin them in a little while, it's been years since I heard'em.
I never dug very deeply into the AC catalog beyond those two releases, but I'm probably gonna start doing that soon. (I can hear my wife's voice already... "What? Another guy with tons and tons of CDs that you're gonna start collecting? Dammit, where's my staple gun?")

After one spin it looks like this disc is gonna have to go back to Hastings. It's scuffed up and skips like a mutha. Oh well.

That stinks. Send them and e-mail and let them know. As long as they have another in stock, they might replace it.
That happened to me once and they sent me a replacement disc, no questions asked. I didn't even have to send back the original.

Meh, no big deal. I've ordered 15 or so used CDs from them over the past year or two with no problems so I was probably bound to get a bunk one sooner or later.
...anyway, I just got off the phone with Hastings, I asked about getting a replacement but the customer service lady sez her computer didn't show any more in stock. (Not sure if I believe that, but whatever...) So they cut me a refund for the bum disc and told me I don't have to bother sending it back. Works for me.
...and of course, now that the disc is mine free and clear, I'm wondering if I should get one of those CD cleaning kits and see if I can salvage this sucker. Haha!!

Good luck. It's been my experience that those kits don't do a f**king thing. The only tried and true method of fixing a scratched cd is one of those buffing machines.

I figure it's worth a shot. I've used 'em in the past with about 50/50 success. I'm not sure if the marks on the surface of this one are actual scratches or just debris/buildup of some sort. Can't hurt to find out.
I picked up a used Motorhead ROCK N ROLL disc a while back that had what looked like splatters of soda or coffee (at least, I hope it was soda or coffee...) on the playing side and the "juice" in the cleaning kit took them right off. Plays fine now.

Yea, splatters or stains (ick!) might come off, but scratches? Forget it. I've read that plain white toothpaste can sometimes buff out scratches too, but I've never tried that method myself.

Here's a whole list of household remedies, toothpaste included. Try at your own risk...

I bought one of those CD kits and it does not work, what's worse is a moron friend of mine gave his Sex Pistols Box set, and I was excited, til I got the disc.
Apparently he read you could sandpaper the scratches (!?!?!?!?!?) out of the discs, so on disc 1 it looks like it got dragged over gravel, all three discs all skip, but I won't get rid of them because the box set is so rare, even if the discs themselves are all unplayable.

Some of those sound a little, errr, dubious to say the least. (Chewing gum? Banana peels?)
But what the hell, I've got a tube of plain ol' white Pepsodent toothpaste in the closet at home, I might give that a try strictly for gits 'n' shiggles. What have I got to lose? If the CD still skips when I'm done, I'll sh*t can it. I already got my refund on it.

The CD buffing machines use Turtle Wax as the agent, just get some liquid turtle wax, smear some on the disc...let it sit and dry for a couple minutes and wipe it clean (from the center hole to the outside edge).
If that doesn't work, sometimes computer disc drives can read discs when standalone players cannot, if you can rip the disc you can always re-burn it onto a blank and then keep both discs in the same case.

I think I may actually have some liquid Turtle Wax in the basement @ home. Thanx for the tip.
Ripping/burning a copy onto a CD-R has also crossed my mind.
Gosh, I'm going to an awful lot of trouble for a CD that only cost me a couple of bucks.

It's great, I've been jamming it daily since Tuesday.
One thing is for sure, the recording/mix is AMAZING, this is what albums should sound like. The mix was done by Steven Wilson who also did the Aqualung remix and the upcoming Thick As A Brick remix.
The CD is also mastered with minimal compression preserving the dynamic range which is a real rarity these days.
