EXACTLY!!! Earlier Riot was more trad metal, whereas they kicked it into speed metal drive here! Judas Priest did something similar with "Painkiller". After "Ram It Down", they went into 'overdrive' and kicked it up to speed!

Agreed! Thundersteel is my #1 speed-metal album. I might mention Iron Angel too for Hellish Crossfire. And, of course, Motorhead, even though Lemmy just says they're "rock 'n' roll."

I've always thought of Venom as more thrash / proto-thrash as they lacked that melodic Priest / Maiden foundation, but this may be splitting hairs. If they count as speed-metal, go ahead and add them to my list.

And like it was mentioned earlier: early Blind Guardian! I love all of Blind Guardian's stuff actually, but yeah, the first two are basically straight-up speed-metal. Much like NWOBHM, I don't think you can go too terribly wrong with early German speed-metal in general. I should also mention Helloween's Walls of Jericho album.

Helloween's "Wall of Jericho" is FANTASCHTICK!!!

I just pulled out What a Joke and listened to it with my 14 year old. I've always felt this cd was very underrated. He was blown away. Attack is one of my all-time favorite songs period, second only to Slay the Wicked.

Dude, you need to get the remastered version with the Happy Meal cover. It will blow you away.

Mine are all original, I haven't heard the remaster yet. My only real complaint with the S/T especially was the drums sound terrible. I listen to Weapons & still can't believe it was recorded so long ago, the guitars sound awesome to these ears anyway.

I sang on a version of this song. It was basically a re-recorded version by Deliverance with myself on vocals. Real heavy, downtuned version. Kind of Machine Head-ish.

Sounds good to me Ult! We only had 1 guitarist so I would plug the 12 string into the old Ampeg & distort the fire out of it!!

I had this 8X10 on my wall when I was 16.

I also had "Greetings of Death" on demo before they were signed!!! I cranked it and cranked it saying 'these guys can be the next Metallica'!!! And ... not too long after ... they kinda were (in Christian-ese circles anyway).
