I think I have decided to take the tire tech job. Mainly because the money is almost twice what I will get for the first half year of trucking. Even if I do have some weeks without a day off, that equates to overtime pay and the 'on call' part of the job is on a rotating basis. Also, it would be easier to find a job when I'm not on the road for so long. The job will be long, hard, and under harsh conditions but it builds character and will only benefit me in the long run.

I'm not getting the tire tech job. They decided to pass on me for now so I am doomed to the life of a trucker. I'm so dissapointed and pissed off right now I can't even think straight.

That sucks... Why do you think they passed on you?

The only thing I can think of is that I asked for more time to decide. Either that or when they interviewed me I gave an air of uncertainty or they just didn't find me the right material. I'm going to try to apply to various jobs in the next week and hopefully I can find something before truck driving becomes a certain reality.

this was more than likely the scenario. there are just too many people in your situation or similar to pick from these days.

I have til the end of the month to find something but I'm giving myself two weeks so I'll have a little bit of time to find a home for my cat. I'm applying for more than just automotive jobs, anything that can give me full time employment. I'm even applying for Wal-Mart as an overnight stocker again (they are hiring for that position) in an attempt to avoid trucking.

$11 x say, 50 hours a week (just being conservative for math's sake) = $550/week x 52 weeks = $28,600/year. And you would have had more hours! In this economy why would you be reluctant to accept that?!

I understand the 70-80...but so? That translates to the $35,000/year or more mark. You're young, unmarried, you could work there until you find something better, get out of debt, etc...it's flat out silly to turn down a job that pays like that.

Either that or trucking, then I can still live here longer. I've been a burden on my dad long enough, he didn't even have to give me this long. Had I done better in my automotive jobs or picked some other technical school I was more qualified for, I wouldn't be in this mess. I really should have told Wingfoot Tires that I wanted the job then and there but I was still holding out for a chance to have a real life (work and leisure-not one or the other) and when I finally realized the money I was passing the chance to earn, it was too late.

Really, going into trucking now is probably the only viable option now. I either need a job that will give me plenty of money (I kind of blew that), enough money until I find something better (which is a major step back), or a career as an OTC driver. Yeah, the last one is more permanent and will cause me to loose my cat, put any chance of ever finding someone and starting a family on hold, keep me away from the family I do have, make me learn to drive a vehicle I'm not comfortable learing to drive and all other sorts of baggage; but it's a decent way to make a living and will keep food on the table and bills paid. Then after a year I can find a company that does local runs.

Both my mom and my dad have told me that things will turn out all right in the end and deep down inside, despite by pessimism, I know they're right. So I find a job or become a trucker.

BTW Scott, it's over with now and I already feel stupid for requesting more time (though in my defence, two people at the interview insisited that I take the time to think about it). Would you kindly let the matter drop. I know you mean well but it doesn't help my situation any.

Ok, you had to know I would ask this but why does becoming a truck driver mean you have to give up your cat? I see stories in my humane magazines all the time about big, tough truck drivers who travel with their cat.
