I love Amoeba. I have no idea how anyone can go through all that stuff in that store in one day. Went there twice with our very own ultmetal, BillRoxx, and Uncle Saxon.

I think you would have to park a travel trailer out front of the store and make it a weekend. There is a record swap happening in the parking lot of the old Tower Records store this Saturday, I should avoid it like the plague, but it sounds too cool to pass up. |

I was only there once years ago. After experienceing what can only be described as a sexual release in my trousers, I spent about 5 hours and a coupla hundred bucks there. I will return there again before I die, even if I have to sell one of my children to do so. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. | I've only seen Amoeba Records on TV (in a Rachael Ray "vacations" episode on Food Network of all places, and in the "Lemmy" documentary) but that was enough to tell me that I must make a pilgrimage there someday. _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

Imagine a store as big as your local Sears. 2 huge floors of music, movies and memorabilia. They literally handed me a map of the store when I walked in. They also gave me a 10% discount at check-out when I told them it was my first time there. Try mentioning that the next time you go there Shawn. Aside from the money I spent, I had to stop myself because I was flying home and was getting worried that I wouldn't be able to stuff all my loot in my bags to get them on the plane. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. Sounds like the main Tower Records store in Midtown Manhattan (side note: GOD, I miss Tower Records SOOOOOO frickin much! SOB!)... that place was huge, I had never been in a record store big enough to require an elevator (!) before. the first time I went there years 'n' years ago I had a similar reaction to what you described a few posts back. I swear I heard angels singing ("Ahhhh-aaaaaaa-aaaaahhhhhh!") when I walked through the doors. I remember telling one of my dorm buddies about the place (we were freshmen in college at the time) so the next time I went out there I took him with me. We wandered around in there for hours and my friend eventually walked out with -- get this -- "Look What the Cat Dragged In" by Poison. I sez "I don't get you. We just went to the most famous record store in the world, it's wall to wall with insanely obscure stuff, and you buy a CD that you could pick up at any K-Mart." _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

| Amoeba makes the old Tower in Seattle seem tiny by comparison (and that place was big too). He wasn't kidding about "Sears size". Plus there is one of the few remaining Cinerama theaters next door!!!!! Can't wait to go see something there! |

I'd settle for at least one decent CD store with a large selection (like Virgin Megastore). My last place (a Sam Goody/FYE in a Ft. Worth mall-still not touching Virgin) I went to every several months shut down the last time I was there. If I ever win the lottery (in my dreams), I will take a trip to this place.

| Good Dog! Caught the tail end of this on TV today and when I saw I could pick it up for around $3 ppd, I figured why not. What can I say, I'm a sucker for animal movies. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| Was just at Amoeba in Hollywood this past week. It is like a timewarp with lots of people (amazingly young folks too) buying actual music. I always plan out at least three seperate trips so I can go through as much as I can. One problem is the metal section (labeled Power and Black) doesn't usually include the best finds - those are usually dispersed in the general used section. I do love their tough grading system so that anything they don't consider very good is significantly marked down with a yellow note. With most of those I've never even been able to see the scratches at all. I need one whole visit just for the 2.99 rows. The last visit is the "should've bought it before" trip, and damn if it isn't gone by then. I still kick myself over not getting those Blood Feast discs they had for 12.00.
As great as they are for music I've never found/bought a single movie from them. They seem really high with just about everything.
At Rockaway Records managed to find two long time movie wants (and as a result expect Criterion to announce them for blu-ray any day) Spartacus Eisenstein : The Sound Years (A big fan of Alexander Nevsky and the battle on the ice)

| I picked up a few of their "as-is" budget DVDs, they have very light surface marks but play perfectly.
Thanks for the tip on Rockaway, now to find them on the map.

Free is good! I have "Hell Night" on DVD, in fact I was just thinking a couple of days ago that it's due for a re-watch. _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

The movie is honestly pretty average, it's no better and no worse than any other slasher flick of the time, but Linda "Exorcist" Blair was at the peak of her early '80s hotness in it. _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

| She's never been one of my favorites as far as hotness goes. What did you think of Savage Streets? Honestly, I really like '80s vigilante films but found that one to be rather under par. It had its moments, but it just didn't satisfy my appetite for violent carnage. I must admit that the principal was a trip, telling the bullies to "go f*** an iceberg" and "take your f****t a**es out of the school". | |
