| I dig the Armored Saint and Heathen albums. Not sure I have heard much more than that. The Forbidden was half-cool/half-suckfest. Other than those, I think I have just been catching up on 80's crossover this year more than anything. hold on - If Gama Bombs last album came out in 2010, that would have been my hands-down Top Pick. but it may have came out last year. |

| This was a year of fantastic live releases, haven't purchased that many studio albums this year. As of "this moment", I would select these as my favorite releases.
1. Opeth - In Live Concert At The Royal Albert Hall 2. Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize 3. King's X - Live Love In London 4. Heaven & Hell - Neon Nights: Live at Wacken 5. Grand Magus - Hammer Of The North (favorite metal album of the year) 6. High On Fire - Snakes For The Divine 7. The Sword - Warp Riders
to be continued...

| Last I checked, I don't think I'd even bought ten 2010 releases.
So right now it's pretty much...
Accept's BLOOD OF THE NATIONS
followed by... uh... everybody else . _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

| 1. Star One - Victims of the Modern Age Really surprised me this one. Not that I didn't love the first Star One album, I just didn't know there was a new one coming nor did I think it'd be THIS good. This was an instant pleaser album. Amazing songs, lots of melodies and it's damn heavy too. An exceptionally well done scifi theme album. The only album this year I've heard so far I'd give a perfect 10/10 score. Digital Rain and Earth That Was to start the album should be enough to convince any classic metal fan, but throw in tracks like 24 Hours (it's like Robert Plant singing about Kurt Russel) and Human See, Human Do (vintage Maiden!) and you've got a winner!
2. Blaze Bayley - Promise and Terror Blaze is still one of my favourite songwriters and the new one didn't disappoint. The last six tracks on this album are just musical perfection. The previous Blaze release was my favourite, but this one is damn close.
3. Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier A challenging listen, but very rewarding. I still cannot get over how massive it really is. All the songs have a lot of depth and it couldn't have ended better than with just these four amazing tracks - Starblind, Talisman, The Man Who Would Be King, When the Wild Wind Blows...
4. Rage - Strings to a Web I'm a bit of a new Rage fan, but I'm going to say this is their strongest since Soundchaser, if not BETTER. This is actually the first Rage album I've bought the week of its release. Especially the Empty Hollow part of the album is honey to the ears of someone who loved XIII and Ghosts like me.
5. Avantasia - The Wicked Symphony / Angel of Babylon I'm cheating a little here by combining these two very good albums as one single entry. But I wouldn't want to start thinking which of the two releases deserved a higher ranking. And now I get to include an 11th album to the list...
6. Helloween - 7 Sinners Once again, a nice good chunk of pumpkin power metal - I'm a bit sentimental, but this is a top ten album at least for me. World of Fantasy is a great tune.
7. Circle II Circle - Consequence of Power Seems like Zak Stevens can do no wrong. Following a strong Machines of Grace release, this is now my second favourite CIIC release only after Burden of Truth. They got the sound right here and the songwriting is there too. Out of Nowhere has to be among the best songs of 2010.
8. Blind Guardian - At the Edge of Time A must include for a power metal fan like me. This failed to impress me at first, but it's a grower and now deserves a spot in the top ten.
9. Jon Oliva's Pain - Festival An album full of real strange sounding songs, and total insanity at times, but that's the way I like my JOP! You have your classic Savatage sounding tracks like Living on the Edge (AWESOME!) and then something totally different, but still pounding heavy metal masterpieces like the title track. And you get your fix of ballads, too. This is pretty much as diverse an album as I could take as a listener. This would be my 'desert island' pick for 2010, too, for that very fact, too.
10. Sons of Liberty - Brush-Fires of the Mind Yeah, Jon Schaffer writes ridiculous conspiracy theory lyrics that would make Jesse Ventura proud. And while they do take away a little bit of the enjoyment, underneath all that pretentious, juvenile "BANKS/MONEY/GOVERNMENT/ ARE TEH EVAL!" is a fine, straight-forward metal album that makes you pump your fist. I like all the tracks. Maybe it's just my taste in music, but I will include this no matter what.
By the way, Schaffer totally reminds me of the "Goverment Totally Sucks" dude from the Tenacious D movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1kq0eL-ly8. You'd probably get a lot of free swag from his novelty store if you took your guitar with you and played this song.
So there. My top ten, so far. It will probably change a lot as I listen to more albums, and as I listen to albums I already have more. I think a month or two is too little to decide if I will eventually end up liking an album a lot, or get totally bored of it or if I end up thinking it's a classic!
I'm just hoping I will find one more album to rank high, so I can put Helloween's 7 Sinners as #7. | |
