My buddy played me a couple albums by this band called Brainstorm the other day. I never heard them before, theyre from Germany. They play basically traditional heavy metal with thrash/power metal tendencies and even though they werent doing anything new or original as far as groundbreaking, they do what they do almost perfectly. Those who love the old Dio and Metal Church style would love this band to death. Anyway, my friend told me nobody knows about these guys but they are awesome.
You've been a member of this board for years, and this is the first you hear about Brainstorm?!!

their final album was also their fastest & best. the drummer just goes blastbeat insane thoughout the entire 41 songs. no one here would touch this disc with a 10 foot pole other than myself & probably DeathCult, but it rules anyway.
My only exposure to this band is from the video Bert and Ernie go Brutal. You can see it here:
I love the song. Maybe I should check out this album.

Ha, I have a whole list of those for ya.
This is probably one of my favorite metal records of all time. It's chaotic, horribly recorded and pretty short, but damn me is it good. This is just epic metal perfection. Brocas Helm are probably the best "cult" US metal band. Just listen to Fly High... amazing!
This is what Rising Force would sound if they were a proper band instead of a group of musicians centered around good ol' Yngwie. Amazing neoclassical riffs and leads, shrieking vocals and a crushing rhythm section. That's what I'd call proper metal!
This might just be the best 1990s heavy metal album. On this record, Solstice played a mixture of epic metal and doom, with elements of English folk thrown in for good measure. It's rather hard to compare them with other bands, since they have a sound that is completely their own, but they were definitely influenced by stuff Candlemass, Ross the Bos-era Manowar, Hammerheart-era Bathory and Warlord. Amazing album.

Where's the thrash, people? The majority of these 'killer" album you mention are gonna remain unheard by me.

Beat me to it. I'm usually quite fluent in Fuzzy Metal Logo-ese, but I can't make heads or tails out of that one.

Another Fantastic Thrash release that alot have never heard due to either the price or unawareness of the band. This album is not one of those classics that is highly sought after just for rarity sake but its great music as well.

Thanks to Ben, there can't be a lone soul on this board not aware of this album!

Yeah, all of Zero Hour's stuff is win. Don't know why they aren't more known, but that goes for all the stuff I mentioned. ZH is a *little* above that stuff in popularity but they still deserve to be way more known.

Speaking of stuff-Chris-Salinas-sings-on-that-I-would-much-rather-listen-to-than-Dream-Theater,
something which is pretty literal on the Dream Theater meets Queensrÿche description. Not the super mindblowing amazing 100% flawless album or whatever some may expect it to be... but some extremely engaging and enjoyable prog metal... 'Alone I Stand'..'Test of Wills'..'The Naked Mind'..great stuff. Good luck finding an actual affordable copy, however. I mean, I have one, but I'm the best.
tob: waattttttt. Well, they're extremely memorable to me. It took forever, but having been into them for some time now and owning everything I would say a good 80% of ZH stuff is very memorable to me, quite awesome. Huge sections of 'Stratagem', 'Demise and Vestige', 'A Fragile Mind', or 'The Falcon's Cry' will just enter my head suddenly and not go away.

Can somebody please PM me when the recommended bands in this thread are not of the prog or thrash variety?
Thanks.

Go to YouTube and search Glenmore Tell Me.
You're welcome.

I enjoy that POWER OF OMENS disc (and have a t-shirt of them, that I wear quite often) but if anyone says their songwriting is up to the caliber of old DT, QR, or FW then I think they're high on the crack rock.
