What, Diocletian from New Zealand? I like 'em, but I can why they're not a big band...

Not sure if anyone's heard of these guys (or have, but didn't think much of them). But here is a Canadian thrash band called Mastery. The vocals aren't very good, because there are no vocals! I'm not sure how that sits with all of you. I picked this up a couple of years ago and enjoyed it, but with the influx of new retro thrash bands I kind of forgot about this disc.
Obviously, one of the drawbacks with no vocals is it is hard sometimes to distinguish one song to the next. But the music on this disc is great (very good driving music). Here are a couple of clips from their album Lethal Legacy. Enjoy (or don't)

metal archives has Billy Milano listed as vocalist, so i gather they'll be including them in the future.

I mentioned them here a long time ago (before Billy Milano joined) but i guess it got erased somehow. They stayed at my friends house a couple days on their first tour of the states.

Yeah Mastery has some killer riffs but it would be nice to add a vocalist to the mix.

I think Liquid Monster is their best.
I ended up buying Liquid Monster. It's not bad but I have to say it's not as ass-kicking awesome as Metus Mortis or Soul Temptation. Also, the bonus DVD is the worst thing I've ever seen packaged with a CD. 25 minutes of my life I'd like to have back. It's basically just random tour video shot by the band, and it's totally useless. My holiday videos have more action than that. There's a bonus track - Before the Dawn originally by Judas Priest - but it's also kind of 'meh'. Don't get me wrong, it's a well played version, but just too close to the original to be worth much at all.
The album starts off quite well, but doesn't sustain the initial appeal. Metus Mortis is probably still my favourite, though Soul Temptation is almost just as good.

I have Metus Mortis and Soul Temptation as well as the newest one and I still think Liquid Monster is the best thing Brainstorm have done. I think it's because LM is more "accessible" IMO; the songs just seem more memorable and less concerned about being "dark and proggy".

I'm having a hard time getting Death Warrant's Time Of Dying to leave my cd player. The poor production (they're just demos and live recordings) will turn most off, but I think it adds something to it. Also some of the live tracks sound better than their studio versions.
And on the opposite side of things, Diving For Pearls - s/t is all kinds of great melodic rock.

OOOOOHHHH! Those are some good ones there! I am not familiar with the other ones that I took out. Are Ultra, Hydra & Toad in the same vein?

Ultra is a hard rockin' band that released one album in 1975-76, they've got a Wishbone Ash meets Ted Nugent with a Southern Rock flair with a Southern Rock sounding singer.
Hydra released 3 great albums from '74-'77 and they are a heavy Southern Rock band.
Toad's Forever Blue is a Proto Metal album from '72 with a Bluesy feel with a little Prog reminiscent of their first album thrown in here and there.
Get 'em ASAP Chewie.

Not "metal", but a peerless set of jazz-rock circa January 1971. Recorded 4 months after Hendrix's death, this was Coryell's way of paying tribute...using the Hendrix "sound" and combining it with a live set of adventurous jazz improvisation. It's like Coryell plays Hendrix playing jazz.
Amazing and one of the most fulfilling jazz-rock-fusion albums from that era.

I know that a lot more people seem to know 'Decoding the Soul' than the earlier Mag9. I always wanted to check the earlier stuff out. 'Decoding the Soul' by the way, sounds IDENTICAL to Fates Warning - 'Inside Out'. Good record, but yeah.

The earlier stuff (Chaos to Control) is "proggier" sounding, with less emphasis on hooks. To put it another way, it's "No Exit" rather than "Inside Out".
