Same thing goes for Edenbridge, a band I used to put as high as Nihtwish. Nowadays I cringe if i try to put their albums on. This is something I typed on another board I go to. There is a Nightwish thread there too, and this was in response to a comment similar to yours: ___________________________________________________________________ See, when I start feeling burnt out on one of my favorite bands, I give them a long break. That's what I did with Nightwish in fact. For a while there last year, I was starting to feel burnt on them. So I just stopped listening to them for a while. In about a year, I returned to their stuff ...and wow! I can see why I fell in love with them in the first place. You might wanna try doing this. It spares you from ditching favorite bands. I also listen to many styles of music, and this keeps my interest as well. So my favorite bands are more 'consistent', rather than just passing fads.

| It's also possible to simply get burned out on a musical style. I'm totally fried on the female-fronted gothic(ish) metal style. I used to collect this stuff like stamps but I've been selling a lot of it off lately and I really don't miss it. I might in a couple of years but right now, other than the classics like "Wishmaster", this style seldom ever manages to get into my CD player. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| On a whim, I picked up a copy of Nightwish's CENTURY CHILD at a thrift shop over the weekend for a buck. I know next to nothing about the band, I may have heard an track or two from 'em over the years but never a full album before. So anyway, gave it a spin and it's... OK. That Tarja chick has definitely got lungs (she's cute too), musically they sound like Lacuna Coil and Stratovarius gave birth to a love child at a T.S.O. concert. Waaaaaayyyyy over the top with the pomposity. Nearly every damn track sounds like it should be the end-credit theme to a big budget epic movie. I kinda dig it, but I doubt I'll be picking up any more of their CDs. This is the kinda band where one album is pretty much all I'm ever gonna need. _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

| Well first I'm weary on the idea that femme metal is sort of..considered it's own genre somehow now... but it isn't really NW's fault, so...
I think the band is pretty inconsistent, but when they have really good stuff, it's some of my favorite. 'Oceanborn' is one of my favorite albums, the songwriting, atmosphere, and feel is all unique and stirring for me, and there's nothing else they have that's quite like it. 'Wishmaster' is close but there's so much less of the more esoteric feel and a little bit more of this..rush-to-the-chorus kind of thing that loses me sometimes. 'Century Child' does that more correctly, but also introduces some terrible elements that would eventually replace their defined sound. 'Once' is ... garbage, and ... melodically speaking..and just speaking in the context of songwriting.. 'Dark Passion Play' is my second favorite..my big gripe with it is, like with 'Once', Emppu gets to do absolutely nothing. When there's a nice riff here and there like in 'Sahara' and some of 'The Poet And The Pendulum', and you contrast it with what goes on in most of the chug-chug of the album, you see how glorious it could have been. I also really enjoy Annette's vocals on that album.
The only full length I don't have is the debut, so I can't really comment on that, but I do enjoy the 'Astral Romance' remake on the 'Over the Hills..' EP.

| Like most bands, Nightwish is just one of those bands that you either love, tolerate, or hate. Some people like the big Hollywood soundtrack sound and some people prefer their music a little more raw. I love movie soundtracks from epic movies so bands like Nightwish, Rhapsody, and the like who mix that with heavy metal, which is a music I style I love as well, it's a cocktail I could drink myself drunk with. | |

| I picked up Oceanborn after hearing Dark Passion Play, which I really enjoyed. Oceanborn is growing on me, but its not one of my favorites. It's definitely the kind of music that I have to be in the mood to hear. I like the tunes that contrast the rougher, male vocals with the operatic soprano. That's what I liked about Dark Passion Play. | |

| 'Visions' has some monster songs but I think I would say take 'Episode' over that one... just because 'Visions' has the song 'Paradise' which is ........ just a putrid song, really, even by Strato standards.. | |

| I'm one of those who love Nightwish. I like everything they have done. I miss the operatic vocals, but Anette's more commercial voice is great as well.
faves for me: 1. Oceanborn 2. Once 3. Dark Passion Play 4. Century Child
I was disappointed with their newer live album "Made in Hong Kong..." because most of the material was from DPP. None of their backlist was included, and I would like to have heard Anette cover some of Tarja's material. Oh well, it is still a good release.

| I got into Nightwish with Oceanborn, and liked each subsequent album just a bit less than the one before it. Then Tarja left... I bought DPP hoping for the best, but didn't get it. It's not a bad album for it's style/niche, but its nothing special, or even that distinctive. Nighwish is no longer the frontrunner in the sub-genre they helped forge, they are just another commercial power metal band with a pop female lead. Like those are in short supply. | |

| So the two virtual concerts Nightwish just performed drew 150,000 paid viewers, which translates to about $4-$5 million in gross profit.
Think virtual concerts are going away any time soon? Haha.
