| I realize that many here probably aren't into female fronted symphonic metal, but I'm sure there are a few that do like it. So what about Nightwish? What are your thoughts on this band? Do we have any fans here? I've been on quite a kick lately, just listened to three albums in a row from them. | |

| Never enjoyed them much. I laugh at this video every time I see it, though:

| I love the Tarja-era stuff. After that...not so much. And it's not the new singer's fault entirely. I think Tuomas' songwriting has just gotten way too bloated. He's Jim Steinman on steroids these days; every song has to be an "epic". _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

They don't have a bad album. C'mon admit it; Angels Fall First is pretty lame. I much prefer the Tarja era and even I think that album is pretty weak. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| Pretty lame? Why would I admit that? It's their weakest album sure ... but it has a lot of redeemable moments on it! Sheesh. | |

It's their weakest album sure ... but it has a lot of redeemable moments on it! Sheesh. The fact that I prefer Dark Passion Play over Angels Fall First tells you all you need to know about my feelings about AFF. IMO, all AFF shows is the potential of what was to come but standing on it's own I think it's really weak. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

Gimme a break dude, you should know me better than that. I'm not trying to tell you what you opinion should be; I'm just asking you to make sure you're admiration for Angels Fall First isn't based on your self-admitted Nightwish fanboyness. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

I'm not trying to tell you what you opinion should be; I'm just asking you to make sure you're admiration for Angels Fall First isn't based on your self-admitted Nightwish fanboyness. I admit I'm a fanboy. Have been for years. But no, seriously - although they left the album in the dust with later releases, "Angels Fall First" was quite groundbreaking when it first came out in the 90s. It inspired a whole generation to move the gal to the front in metal! So yes, it has been surpassed. But it's still a great album. But see, I followed Nightwish starting with this album. It was my introduction to the band. So it will always be special. Toho, did you get into the band at this album? Or later? Because if I had gotten into Nightwish around the time of "Wishmaster" or such, my opinion of "Angels Fall First" might be different. I don't think so though ... but it's hard to say. I would rate "Angels Fall First" a solid 8/10. It's a good, although not great, album.

| I just saw them like two weeks ago. Good show, bad seats.
I never really liked Tarja. I remember I got into the band after Wishmaster came out, and while they were already very popular in Finland after Oceanborn, I just couldn't get into them because of the vocals. It seemed a bit gimmick-y.
But Wishmaster is such an intense power metal album that I couldn't resist anymore. Great songs all throughout and you get used to the vocals. After hearing it once I got into the band big time. After that I got the first two also, and sort of enjoyed both - well, at least Oceanborn.
Century Child and Once were both awesome and there was less of that operetic style of singing, the songs also got heavier, though I had nothing against that European power metal approach they had on Oceanborn/Wishmaster.
I like Anette, maybe even more than Tarja. She's a more traditional style vocalist and the songs are still awesome, so no complaints. And Dark Passion Play has its share of straight up rockers like Bye Bye Beautiful, Amaranth or Master Passion Greed, no orchestra there, so it's not just ridiculously epic tracks one after another.
Here's how I'd rank the albums: 1. Once 2. Wishmaster 3. Century Child 4. Dark Passion Play 5. Oceanborn *drop* 6. Angels Fall First
I also have the DVD, End of an Era.

I would rate "Angels Fall First" a solid 8/10. It's a good, although not great, album. Yeah, I got into Nightwish with Wishmaster; still my favorite album by the band. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

Same here. Wishmaster is the only one of that style that ever sees the light of day nowadays. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| I used to like 'em. Got into the band when Century Child was new. And have followed them ever since. Own all of the albums. But I think I'm just burt out on the whole female fronted operatic metal thingy. Same thing goes for Edenbridge, a band I used to put as high as Nihtwish. Nowadays I cringe if i try to put their albums on. _________________ | |
