Subject: Question for old-school video game fans... Sega Genesis? Mon Mar 30, 2009 1:28 pm
Anyone remember this little beauty?
The wife and I were closet cleaning over the weekend and came across our old Sega Genesis game system, which we hadn't used in a couple of years. Just for giggles we hooked it up after the kids went to bed and spent an enjoyable evening doing some serious retro gaming. I am pleased to report that I can still KICK ASS on oldies but goodies like Ms. Pac-Man, Sonic Spinball, Centipede, Golden Axe, Frogger, and Bubsy!!
We bought that Genesis and about a half dozen cartridges at a Toys-R-Us sale in the late 90s (the Genesis was being phased out by the Sega Saturn at the time, which was supposed to be the Next Big Thing from Sega, but we all know how that turned out, haha) and picked up a few extra games here and there over the next few years at yard sales, flea markets, etc.
Anyway, I've been out of the video game loop for a LONG time now but playing those old games the other night got us thinking about maybe tracking down some "new" (or at least new to us) games for our Genesis. Can anyone recommend a decent store or web site that deals in old cartridges? Amazon has lots of them (really cheap, too) but I really don't want to order a bunch of different games from a dozen different dealers, I'd like to find an honest site with a decent selection so I can do some one stop shopping. Thanks in advance.

Tried. They seem to have absolutely no Sega Genesis stuff whatsoever.

As I'm sure I've made obvious before, I'm a huge Sega nerd. I still have my Mega Drive set up (Mega Drive being the Europe / Japan name for the Genesis) back at home. It's a bit cumbersome to take with me to uni though, so I'm thinking of picking up one of these little beauts;
For just over £20, seems well worth it. As for picking up more games, I tend to use eBay myself - you can usually get most games (unless they're particularly rare ones like Gunstar Heroes) quite cheap, so give it a gander.

Oh also, Sonic Spinball? Good call, that was one of my first Mega Drive games back when I was small.

That game is awesome! I still can't get past the third level though. Drives me nuts!

I'd say just go through the ol' amazon man, best prices you will find I think. Other than that, check out any garage sales in your neigborhood, sometimes you can find some cool gems every once in a while.
Honestly, I was more a nintendo kid growing up, I remember getting a used NES at a garage sale in the apartments where I lived when I was like 5 or 6. My parents bought the system, a couple controllers, and the carts for Tetris, all three super mario bros, Kirby, and a few others for only 5 bucks...I was way stoked!
Cool games for genisis that I remember that you should check are the sonic the hedgehog games, gunstar heroes like smindas said, and eternal warriors.
gunstar heros is probably the most badass sidescrolling shooter game I have ever played.

I had an NES back in the day too and loved it, but it crapped out sometime during the mid-90s (which was the impetus for me to buy the Genesis). I probably still have the cartridges for it stashed away somewhere (most likely in the basement at my Mom's house)...I occasionally think about picking up an old NES so I could play those games again too. Who knows, maybe I would finally be able to finish Super Mario Bros. 3!
Amazon is starting to look like my best bet for Genesis stuff ...

Your constant Sonic the Hedgehog avatars have made that quite obvious. I kinda hoped you'd chime in here. Thanks for the tips.

The first system I ever played John Madden football on. It wasn't even named after him then. Wow, I'm old.

The first time I played Genesis was probably 1990, one of my fraternity brothers bought one when it was the Hot New Thing To Have. I remember a bunch of us sitting around his dorm room waiting for a chance to try it out and watching the on-screen action, blown away by those graphics, like "Damn. This is THE FUTURE."

Yeah, I remember thinking how real the players looked compared to sports games on Nintendo. Compared to what it is now, it's funny as hell.

Wow, Sega Genesis, they were so ahead of their time Sure, we do have Guitar Hero Metallica and Aerosmith and AC/DC and whatnot these days. But Sega Genesis was the first. Didn't they have the "I Can't Dance" dance mat also?

I don't remember that, but Sega Genesis did have THIS:
The object of the game, by the way, is to guide Michael Jackson through various levels of peril and rescue children, using bad-ass dance moves and hat throwing as weapons. Knowing what we know now about ol' MJ, that part about "rescuing children" is beyond creepy.

I dunno, and I'm not going to pay $24.98 to find out either.
Out of all the Genesis games I've seen while browsing Amazon, that one is the most expensive for some reason. I guess it must appeal not only to video game players, but for collectors of MJ memorabilia, or maybe just people who like retro creepy ironically hilarious items.

Wait... Are you saying you cant find Super Mario Bros. 3 either? I had that game too and it seemed to just dissappear. I have never been able to find it. So now thats 2 people who cant find this game.. hmm sounds like someones stealing SMB 3 games. haha
If you would have wrote this about a year sooner I could have sent you a bunch of games. I had mostly wrestling ones but there was a few others mixed in there. I just might stil have a game laying around that I fogot to put on that ebay auction where I sold what I had. If I do i'll let ya know. I had the sega cd thing too only bought that for that wrestling game Steel Cage. It wasnt as cool as I remembered so I had to just get rid of it all.
You ever see these videos? BEWARE a lot of cursing, but very funny.

It's not that I can't find it, I just haven't been bothered to look for it in awhile. I can't remember if I still had the NES when I moved out of my parents' house back in '96 or if it crapped out beforehand. If it crapped out before I moved, then the cartridges are probably still in the back of a closet at their place. Unless my Mom has found them and thrown them away sometime during the interim.

That'd be cool, thanx. I'm not much for wrestling (or sports games in general) but if you've still got any others hangin' around I'd be interested.

I wonder how much the price on this game has jumped since MJ kicked the bucket?

I've never owned a Sega system. Growing up I was a Nintendo fanboy, haha. The NES, SNES and N64 are the best gaming consoles of all time if you ask me. That said, I'd definitely pick up a Genesis (or Megadrive as we call it) if I found one for cheap.
