The only instrumental album I own is "FIEND CLUB LOUNGE" by The Misfits with the Nutley Brass... lounge-version instrumental covers of Misfits songs. It's frickin' hilarious but strictly a novelty item.

My favorite is "The Last Bullfighter" from the Jazz on the Latin Side All Stars. Say that 3 times fast.

2004, I think (I don't have the disc handy at the moment to check)...
You can get it used and cheap from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Fiend-Lounge-Misfits-Nutley-Brass/dp/B0009UC7NO/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1224165299&sr=8-1
It's almost worth the album price just for the cover art. (There's a drink coaster packaged inside with the same picture on it!)
The album itself is just as bizarre as you'd expect...Misfits tunes played on saxophone, piano, xylophones, there are weird Lawrence Welk bubble sound effects, breathy "ooh's" and "aaah's" in the backgrounds... when I reviewed the CD for Detritus, I said something like "Imagine if the Misfits went back in time to the late 50s and got a job as the house band in a Las Vegas casino lounge." Seriously, this stuff could be the soundtrack to the next Austin Powers movie...though I really wish it had vocals. It would be 100 times funnier if they had some Dean Martin-style crooner singing stuff like "Skulls" over such syrupy music!!
It's really the kind of thing I only listen to once in a blue moon, either when I've had a few too many or I'm just in the mood for a laugh.

No prob, manny. I just dug up my review of the disc that I wrote for Detritus a few years back and PM'd it to ya to check out... I wouldn't recommend paying full price for it but if you can get a cheap used copy it's good for a few laughs.

That sounds like the Richard Cheese albums. Reminds me of the old SNL skits where Bill Murray imitated a lounge singer. "Star W-a-a-a-rs...nuthin' but Star W-a-a-a-a-rs..."
I have the Richard Cheese where he sings NIN's "Closer" (Just hearing F bombs in lounge is hilarious) and Offspring's "Come Out and Play" (he actually yells L'chaim in that one)

The extremist is one of my all time favorites, instrumental or otherwise. Ult, check out Satch's S/T from the late 90's. It's a bit of blues, a bit of Jazz, and very enjoyable. Peace.

Albums: Sonic Prayer, Rhythms From The Cosmic Sky, Live At Roadburn 2008
All instrumental power trio rock/psychedelic/freakout jam albums, most songs average around 22 minutes. Isiaih Mitchell is a MONSTER guitarist, but he's not a "shredder", it's all about feel and groove.
All available on either CD or Vinyl from Tee Pee Records.

I cannot get into shredders. Blah! I can dig on the atmospheric instrumental stuff by bands like Autumn Tears and Dead Can Dance, but not traditional shredding type stuff. Years ago, I didn't like any instrumental stuff besides the mellow atmospheric or acoustic stuff. But then I heard Canvas Solaris. I picked the album from a used bin because it was a Sensory Records release, and at that point Ken Golden was batting 1,000 with me (still is).
When I put the album in my CD player I immediately loved it. But I kept waiting for vocals. They didn't come. I looked in the booklet and got sad. Haha. I just quickly assumed that I wasn't going to like it, even though I was actually enjoying it! Weird. Anyway, as it continued to play I continued to love it. And there it was. I really dig instrumental prog-metal or rock. Since then I've picked up some great instrumental discs by Canvas Solaris, Liquid Tension Experiment, A Triggering Myth, Tomas Bodin, Planet X, Indukti, Niacin, and a bunch of others. I love it.
Check out Canvas Solaris:

I think you did. They're popular around here. I can't find a thing by them. I just stumbled across a Liquid Trio Experiment the other day in town. I guess it was three of the dudes just doing some improvisational jamming while another had to go home for something or whatever. They recorded it and released it. That damn thing was used...for $18. Pfffft!

I found that L.T.E. disc in a thrift store for a buck, it was in near-mint condition if memory serves (hope it was still that way when it got to you, I've had some Postal Service horror stories, heh heh) and that was the main reason I picked it up. Most times any CDs I find in that store are scratched to sheeeeeit.

I'm not a fan of shredders either, that's why I lean towards either the bluesy, jazzy or "trippy" direction.
Even though it does have some vocals on it, I recommend the first Platypus record - When Pus Comes To Shove. Available on emusic.
