I think id get the box set before the live stuff, I have most of the tracks from the box set but the box set's is better quality heh I think the Nirvana box has the 2 Greg Sage covers (finding the tribute albums they are on is hard heh)

When I was in college I wrote a paper on Kurt Cobain, I included a tape one side was their hits and the 2nd side was unreleased b-sides type stuff It was a good Nirvana mix

But Bleach is a good album

Did any of you know that "Nirvana" was also the name of a British psychedelic band from the late '60s? I didn't either, till I ran across an entry about them in a book I'm reading about record collecting.

Faaaaaar....ouuuuuuut, maaaaaan.

Supposedly these guys sued the "other" Nirvana in 1992 over the rights to the name and they were eventually paid beaucoup bucks. They apparently continue to perform under the "Nirvana" name today.

Wiki sez this band recorded a version of Cobain's "Lithium" in the early 90s for a planned album of covers called "Nirvana Sings Nirvana" but the project was abandoned after Kurt's suicide, feeling that such a release would be in poor taste.

Kurt Cobain had an ignorant view on heavy metal except for glam metal. He should of just stuck by ridiculing the glam metal bands instead of all the bands that were under the heavy metal label most of the glam metal bands actually really needed a kick in the ass in the early 90s because they thought they had a monopoly on the music world and were spoilt brats CC Deville even admitted back then he and Poison were spoilt brats. What Kurt was oblivious to was that there was something that he and the metal bands in the thrash metal, death and doom metal world or the basically the underground world of heavy metal had in common they both saw the term "rockstar" as a derogatry term and hated "posers".
Also Kurt Cobain was being cruel to be kind to the 80s glam metal bands because they pulled their fingers out of their arses in the 90s and wrote better quality music: Native Tongue by Poison, s/t by Motley Crue, Pull by Winger are great examples.

As for Nirvana's music Bleach and some of the songs from Nevermind and Insectiside were good. The rest mediocre and samey

all ive done all week is play Nirvana all day long. go listen to the live at reading album. its heavy as stink.

i dont see why metal fans hate them so much. fair enough if you dont care for the music but saying they destroyed metal doesnt work for me. sure thrash was replaced by grunge as the underground rock genre of choice but thrash had peaked by then anyway

Never did like grunge or the Seattle scene in general at that time except for Alice in Chains. My main reason for this is that I had to find a different job within 2 months of " Smells Like Teen Spirit " hitting the radio. I was teaching about 50-60 guitar students a week and most of them decided it was no longer cool to practice and improve in terms of skill level since Nirvana could be famous and play 3 chords. It seemed to me like a return to the attitude of the late 70's- early 80s with the punk movement taking emphasis off technical playing ability and focusing on image and attitude. I don't hate them like I used to but it's still not my favorite thing.

Hey, bite me...I paid just a couple bucks for Nevermind on Ebay and it arrived with just the front cover of the booklet (no booklet, just the page with the cover torn from the booklet)...

Besides, I won't be the one buying it... Very Happy

Honestly, I don't see why they don't just release the DVD as a "Deluxe DVD w/ 3 bonus CDs" and leave Nevermind alone...

Same goes with a lot of reissues...just put out the bonus material as Rarities Comps and leave the albums alone...

If they did that then I would buy it, same thing with Black Sabbath albums, just release the live album as its own product. The Stones at least as a Target exclusive released the bonus material on Exile On Main Street for $10 if you did not feel like shelling out money to rebuy the same album again.

I was expecting something like this, which is partially why I haven't bothered to upgrade my old NEVERMIND cassette to CD yet.

Fat Freddy wrote:
I liked Nirvana as soon as I heard "Smells Like Teen Spirit." As Manny said, the hard rock/metal genre was in a bit of a slump at that time (way too many of "our" bands were coasting on their reps and putting out sub-par records) and let's face it, that damn song has hooks big enough to catch a whale.

Of course, the band quickly became overexposed as hell, to the point where I got a little sick of looking at'em and therefore I don't listen to 'em as much as I once did. One of these days I really need to upgrade my old NEVERMIND cassette to a CD copy. I also agree with S, that the "Unplugged in NY" album is a great disc.

Unlike a lot of metal heads, I never blamed Nirvana for the "downfall" of metal from the pop culture arena. As we all know, music works in cycles. Metal had a number of good years in the sun, but much of it had started to get realllly stupid by the end of the '80s, so it was time for something new to come along and take its place. If it hadn't been Nirvana, it would've been somebody or something else. Therefore, I always find it funny when I see some hair metal fan ranting on a message board about "F##in' Nirvana! If they hadn't come along, Britny Fox and Def Leppard would still be in the top 10 and everything would be right with the world!" or whatever.

Aside from that, and this is strictly a theory of my own so you can feel free to tell me to go jump in a lake, I have always felt that the main reason folks in my age group reacted so violently against Nirvana (and grunge in general) because its ascendance was the first sign that we weren't "hip" anymore and that pop culture was moving along without us.

I actually mentioned this to my guitar teacher not long ago about hair band fans and Nirvana. Hair band fans tend to think Kurt Cobain is a worse person than Hitler.

Hair bands like Poison and Warrant aren't metal in the first place, but were marketed by the media as such for whatever reason. A lot of the hair band fans seem to think that if Nirvana never existed and the grunge movement never hit it big, all the record labels would still be looking for the next Poison.

Only one thing would have happened to the hair bands if the grunge movement never hit it big, and that's the exact same thing that did happen. The only difference is that something else would have filled the void of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc.
