ah...actually I can't stand them. I can respect them for making an impact, but I am biased because Nirvana created a style of music that totally helped push out my favorate style of metal: thrash. Once grunge came on the scene, thrash wasnt cool anymore. I like Kurt Cobain for one reason, because he helped Daniel Johnston become slightly successful in the early 90's with his music/art career by wearing a daniel johnston "hi how are you" shirt almost everywhere, otherwise Cobain was a total douchebag IMO.

Man Nirvana were the perfect Left Of The Dial rock n' roll band....but weren't!

IMO everything that was great about the 80's American Underground rolled into one...the cumulation if you will.

I could go with the violent n' sweet sludge n' burn of the debut but my fav is easily Nevermind.....a dyslexic heavy metal Replacements record if there ever was one!

Their bright bouncy pop songs dressed in all manner of heaviness is what i like about them...something alot of my favs of the time were all about as well...like Redd Kross, Urge Overkill, The Wildhearts etc.

Thrash? When? In fact, when was thrash "cool."

Anyway, I love Nirvana. Fantastic band. And piss and moan all you want, Cobain was a simple musician, but he remains one of the greatest songwriters ever.

People are only too willing to buy this whole Myth that Nirvana and Grunge killed Heavy Metal, it's ridiculous!

If anything Nirvana and Seattle saved us from another decade of Kiss Unmasked....and ain't talkin' about Kiss!

I'm pretty sure thrash was on a consistant rise after Master of Puppets was released. In fact Metallica's song One was another huge breakthrough (for thrash).

BLEACH was rawer than sushi but still cool. NEVERMIND was a great record, IN UTERO a little less so.

Kurt Cobain was a great songwriter, songs like " Heartshaped Box" "About a Girl" and a number of other songs were great and they spoke to a generation that were looking for something that was their own and was real. Why people felt they could not like both metal and alternative music is a mystery to me, especially since Kurt Cobain was not only influenced by punk bands and alternative bands, but he also loved Kiss, Black Sabbath, etc.
Nirvana's "Nevermind", "In Utero" and " Bleach" all are landmark albums of the 90's, Nirvana didnot kill any form of music, metal never died, even bands such as Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam who were labeled alternative had more common with metal bands than bands such as Joy Divison, R.E.M., 10,000 Maniacs and whoever else was considered alternative at that time

I don't know. I'd say Metallica was huge, but not thrash. I'm talking mainstream here, something that would be affected by the incoming grunge scene.

Like most metal-heads, I too hated them at the time. They brought about change and I hate change. I've mellowed though over the years and have their Unplugged cd, which I like very much. It's very depressing and I like that. I had their Greatest Hits at one time for a short spell, but traded it away.

I'm right there with ya. I will credit Cobain for being a good songwriter, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

Anyone remember when Nevermind first came out (months before it exploded) and it was marketed for metal fans? Our local metal station 103.1 The Underground had them as the artist of the month. Funny how a lot of those bands that fell under the "grunge" genre were first pushed as metal acts.

Yep, I think the first time I saw the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video it was MTV's "Headbanger's Ball." Early stuff by a lot of what later would be called "grunge" bands (i.e. Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Soundgarden, L7, etc.) -- all got played on Headbanger's Ball back then.
