Is there a story here I should remember? Or do you just mean by forsaking the kick ass metal of yore and going to whatever they went to after "...And Justice For All" _________________ "Oh man, I need TV? When I got T Rex"

| They have obviously erased their roots. I have not heard a word about their initial fan base in 15 years. Just mansions, rehab, hotrods, napster, and weak music. I know I am almost 40, and taking something like this personally is childish. But Metallica was our LIVES!! |

| I dig what youre saying and agree... When bands, movie stars, anyone whose career IS the public eye and they forget that WE are the folks who put them there and kept them there, it sort of blows... I mean were it not for all of us who traded tapes and bought every single magazine that these people graced the covers of for years, where would they be? _________________ "Oh man, I need TV? | Well since Spec made the mp3 I quickly put it on my ipod and listened to this song along with cyanide and even though I blew out one of my speakers the other day and now my stereo sounds like crap the songs are good. I think I would have chosen cyanide (am i spelling that right?) as their first single though I think thats a little more catchier. There are things that do bother me about this new song though. The begining reminds me of that annoying song that goes "Come my lady come come my lady" but thats only that first little part, and the next little piece where the drums come in it sounds like its gonna start that song that goes "I Think Your Craaaaaaaazy" but after that I forget about those things and I like it. Then the heavier part comes in and lars just keeps playing the same damn drum beat and all he does is switch from the cymbals to the hi-hats and im just thinking is that all he could come up with or is there a lot of double bass on this album that he just decided to leave this one without it? Cause if any song needed some double bass it was this one right when the solos and everything is going on. Doesnt have to be the whole thing just little bits here and there to give it a different feel. So as far as drums go on this song im dissapointed in Lars. I learned how to play from this guy does that mean im that bad too? lol.
His sound is also bad and mostly do to that god aweful snare drum. I was looking for a new snare drum a while back and came across his and the guy at the store was telling me how great it sounded. He hit it and im just thinking to myself that sounds like total crap. Hes like here play around with it I was like no thanks his snare sounds like crap.
As far as production goes im pretty sure thats the final mix its just a bad rip like eyesore says. I think Rick Ruben is a good producer (or whatever he actually does) but his mixes arent that great sometimes this definetly could have used a little bit more of that metallica sound to it heavier guitar sound and definetly do some tweaking with the drums.

| Rick Rubin's production can run very hot or cold depending on the album
Good: Masters Of Reality debut Awful: Trouble - Manic Frustration (one of the tinniest sounding albums ever, treble overkill)
As for the discussion at hand...
I can agree with Sax's opinion of Metallica's abandonment of their original fan base, I was part of that group of people (as were most of my friends) and we were all bitter for years. But I've got bigger fish to fry in my life without worrying about a bunch of millionaires.
As for the music, haven't quite decided yet...I liked the initial intro, the mellow segment was good but definitely reminded me of a Fade To Black/Sanitarium variation...the heavier section started off cool but that "Love is a 4 letter word" line almost made me spit out my drink laughing....but then...it gets quite a nice little jam going and that Kirk Hammett solo (no wah pedal!) is the best thing I've heard him play in 20 years.
But I think the thing that bugs me is that in the old days Metallica was able to take tons of riffs and put them together into an organic "whole" that sounded natural...this song has some cool riffs and sections but it sounds Frankensteined together, the parts don't quite equal an actual "song".

| I wouldn't even both discussing the production at this point. Wait until the official song is released (i.e. on the album). And I surely hear nothing wrong with the snare. Sounds like a snare to me. Fairly standard sound. Either way, Lars is definitely not even half the drummer he once was. At least that's my opinion. They say this is one of the mellowest and slowest on the album, though. |

| As far as the lyrics go, remember that this is the same guy that wrote "Gimme fuel, gimme fire, gimme that which I desire". Fire, desire, flat tire, boys choir. I'm no poet or writer, but isn't rhyming fire & desire a cardinal sin? | |

Oh excuse me your a expert on snare drum sounds now? Sheesh Believe me its the worst snare drum ever. EVER! Oh another thing I was going to add was that some parts do sound a little cut and paste and from the clips you can kind of see why when they were moving things around on the computer. Sometimes you can get away with it sometimes you cant.

Ahhh lyrics are whatever they are... Doesnt really matter much to me really. He also wrote a lot of other great songs too before that one.

| Remember how bad mid to late 80's era drum production was? Every hit triggering a sample, etc. BLECH! |

Its no better now tons of bands have triggered drums the production just got better. Triggered drums are just as annoying as lars' snare.

I was speaking of the days before Testament was a band and Exodus did not even have an album out yet. Kill 'em All/Ride the Lightning '83-85. We would have killed had Hetfield ordered us to. Then MoP came out, they started playing bigger clubs with seats, and my people would rip out the first 5 rows to have a place to mosh. Exodus and Testament obviously turned into absolutely killer bands, but they never had control of the souls of their fanbase the way Metallica did. |
