Here's some samples of those I like:
Twilight Ophera. I like how they're really dynamic. It goes from a death metal style to black metal and then some power metal stuff. This CD is excellent!

Keep Of Kalessin. Not sure why I happen to like this band. They're sort of everything I hate about the genre (extremely fast, no consistent hooks or melody, etc.). Haha. But I do really dig the Armada album, at least.
EDIT: Dammit! I already replied here.

My "Black Metal" collection is all the symphonic stuff. I have to emphasize (as with "White Metal"), that I'm pretty indifferent to to a musician's philosophy. I'm just as interested in a musician's philosophy as I am in a philosopher (or theologian's) musical taste. That is to say, not at all. I will say that I might be offended by some of the Black Metal content, but frankly a lot of it isn't even sung in english, or if it is, I can't understand the words anyway. Speaking of offensive, I think I would enjoy Ted Nugent more if he sang in Norwegian actually

Lately I've been getting into it a lot. I can say it's my favorite genre now. But I can definately see how people wouldn't like it. Some bands I enjoy are Mayhem, Darkthrone, Moonblood, Graveland, Early Behemoth, Drifason, Judas Iscariot, and Burzum just to name a few.

I like Black Metal. It is not my favorite style but I have a couple of albums and listen to them from time to time.

Black metal bores me. I have a few black metal CDs but rarely pull them out. People always say things like "it's too heavy for you" or "you're too old for black metal", which is a load of crap. It just doesn't have the appeal to me that thrash metal, classic metal, power metal, classic rock, prog, and even death metal has. Usually the bands rely on keyboards for melody, which I don't care for. The vocalist tend to sound all the same, as in metalcore. It usually lacks hooks, although not always. It's just not my thing unless I happen to be in the mood for it.

I like some....
Antestor - The Forsaken - I find this incredible!
What I've heard of Holy Blood I like a lot
I suppose I like the symphonic stuff. I don't care for the minimalist stuff....
I really enjoyed "blackened" metal where it's not Black Metal but has elements....
I owned Horde for a decade and maybe listened to it 15 times....just could never quite get into it...
I'll avoid the overtly Satanic stuff because I don't want those lyrics in my head although Pagan or Viking stuff doesn't bother me as much. I think of that as more Tolkien-ish stories or Mythologies......

It really depends on the style of BM and lyrical content. One that I've enjoyed the last year or so is Melechesh. I like Borknagar, the more artsy Arcturus, the folksy Falkenbach, pummeling Crimson Moonlight. The last Antestor album was great. I'm just never really in the mood these days. Maybe I'm just getting older and the vocals start to irritate after a while.

There are some black metal bands I like and others I don't. I actually prefer the BM bands who tried to do something more than have the most unreadable logo ever with a pentagram, the crappiest sound and the cliche picture in the woods.

I like some songs, but in generally to me most sounds like the same. So boring. Also the bombast goes on my nerves.
But I do like the first wave. Early Mercyful Fate, Venom, early SatanĀ“s Host and Celtic Frost.

Their are also many bands of today that keep the first wave of black metal alive. Bands like TARANIS, GRAVEWĆRM(nothing to do with the italian pussy black metal band GRAVEWĆRM of course), EVOKED CURSE, FRONT BEAST, URN, BLOOD STORM DECAYED, UNPURE, NIFELHEIM etc....and i hail them very much.

Also, wikipedia says that Mercyful Fate and Celtic Frost are black metal, but I don't think so at all.
I totally agree. Celtic Frost, Venom, and Mercyful Fate had a great influence on black metal as a whole, but those bands displayed more of a classic/nwobhm/thrash sound. Sodom is another band that many claim to be black metal, but imho, they are thrash.

you can't. people just like what they like & don't what they don't. those who don't accept that, usually come up with lame things like that to say.

I strongly suggest checking out Borknagar. They are NOT your typical Black band and they know how to write catchy songs and the melody relies heavily on the guitar and the keys are only for atmosphere. The best IMO is Empiricism, the current vocalist (Vintersorg) has a better clean voice than the previous vocalists. The lyrics avoid the typical evil content of other black metal bands and the music also has some folksy influence in the slower parts. Personally (and according to the band) I don't even really concider them black metal.

yes. it works the other way also. my 12 year old, got into BM on his own. he turned me onto some good smurf poo that eased the pain of my genital condition momentarily.

Viking metal?
I've heard this term before, but is viking metal really an actual genre?
