| I'm a bigger death metal fan, but I enjoy both.
My favorite death metal band is Entombed. My favorite black metal band is Dissection.

| Why isn't this in the Heart of Metal section?
Anyways, my vote definitely goes to death metal.
Not sure who my favorite black metal band is. My favorite death metal bands are Death, Gorguts, Suffocation, Monstrosity, and Disciples of Power.

| To be honest, I don't listen to much of either.
However given the choice I would go with death metal. Bands like Death, Mortification, Atheist, and Possession are some favorites in my collection that is mostly lacking in the death metal department

| I like both black and death metal, as a matter of fact I like pretty much every sub-genre of metal. However, out of these two, the one I prefer better is death metal.
I can't say I'm the biggest death metal fan but judging by my collection I own far more albums released by death metal bands than black metal ones. The main reason is for me death metal feels closer to thrash and I have always considered death metal as a natural progression from thrash metal where it has its roots.
I am particularly fond of the old school death metal scene, by the bands that emerged when death metal was still fresh. My favorites being Morbid Angel, Malevolent Creation, Obituary, Gorguts, Pestilence and Atheist. I am not too interested in the 'brutal' or 'technical' wave of death metal, which is where the newer generation of bands have taken death metal. In saying that, there are some fantastic new death metal bands that manage to peak my interest year after year.
In 2011, one of those bands that I really enjoyed was Decrepit Birth with their recent album Polarity which sounds like a mixture between Pestilence (circa Twisted Into Form) and Nile. Brutal, technical yet also very enjoyable. In addition I also like Behemoth quite a lot and even though they are not exactly new, they have only really been death metal for a little over a decade.
With Black Metal there are some good acts around too, the one band that has floored me as of late is Absu. In my books they are destined to take the lead from many of their black metal peers.
I'm not sure whether by death metal you also mean melodic death metal, in which case I have quite a lot of favorites there with all the usual suspects topping my list.

Pretty much this. I am still getting into Black Metal, but my favourite bands are Burzum and Darkthrone. For Death Metal, there are four bands that I cannot get enough of: Death, Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, and Deicide. All of them are just really unbelievable bands. Death is definitely the reason I got into Death Metal.

Stylistically, Black Metal (early) tends to get more shrill and shriek-like with the vocals while Death Metal (early) had much lower, more guttural vocals. Then there are differences in terms of arrangements and atmosphere. I can see easily how someone unfamiliar would think it all sounded the same. But put Dismember up against early Emperor and you'll hear a big difference.

| Definitely the arrangements are very different from those in death metal. Whereas in dm the riffs are palm muted so you get this deep distorted chugg sound, in black metal bands traditionally play open string riffs. In death metal the focus is also on precision and technique, whether it is about playing very complex riffs and solos or technical drum patterns; black metal is the opposite, it is almost the anti-thessis of death metal in that regard. The sound of traditional black metal is far messier, with almost no emphasis on anything technical displayed in the music.
Production values also differ significantly between these two genres. Although there was a time when death metal sounded slightly raw and under produced, the tendency has always been to push for better production that would make every musician stand out. In that regard death metal is not so different to other forms of metal.
By contrast, traditionally black metal was devoid of any production. This was in fact by choice as bands like Burzum simply wanted to express what they felt unmodified or filtered by any type of production. There was never any concern about the type of instruments, micorophones, or any music and recording equipment. Bands just used whatever was at their disposal.
Traditional black metal was reactionary and regressive (more so than grunge). The initial bands of the second wave simply thought that metal was devoid of any life and emotion, and metal as a whole including death metal had become too commercialised with everyone being concerned s about production values and highly skilled musicianship.
Black metal also had a different image, and not limited to corpse paint. It was ideologically charged with many bands having nationalist inclinations and some agendas. The themes in black metal talk about a romanticised past - vikings and norse mythology themes are prevalent and used in a sense to awake a past social and political identity.
In this regard satanic lyrics are less common in black metal than they are in death metal. Usually it is the more popular black metal bands will employ satanic themes, imagery and corpse paint. Other black metal bands like Immortal are more fantasy based and draw inspiration from nature to create their own worlds and stories.
As a whole, you will find a mixture of black metal bands some that mimick the traditional sound and style of the second wave of black metal bands but without really adding anything new and rarely snything inventive; there are also bm bands that have expanded their style either in a prog direction like Enslaved and Absu, or adding better production and influneces from other sub genres.

C'mon FF, get with the program. I was gonna say something about the vox in death metal being more guttural "blurrrrgh" whilst black metal vox are more like shrieky monkey squeals, but I got interrupted before I could finish that post. _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"
