My wife and I went to the supermarket for a few odds and ends this morning after the kids left for school. They opened at 7 AM, we got there at about five to 7, and there was already a line of people waiting for the doors to open. I was like "Is it Black Friday? Is there a sale on TV's?"
Fortunately we already have a enough stash of TP/cleaning supplies/etc. so I didn't even have to go down those aisles (we were there mainly for milk, dog food, bread, etc. like any other week)... I told my wife before we walked in, "I refuse to get into a fistfight with someone over friggin' toilet paper."

He's not going. I caught them last night and Blitz told everyone the final 2 days were cancelled.

I saw that they announced it on their Facebook page along with this picture

I went to the grocery store today too and they had plenty of everything except toilet paper. I mean milk, bread, eggs, etc. I was even able to buy laundry bleach which I thought might be gone since you could disinfect with it.
The whole TP thing just blows my mind. I mean diarrhea isn't even a symptom of coronavirus infection so why is there a major "run" (pun intended) on toilet paper????? It's so stupid; has to be some social media rumormongering.
I did check my personal TP situation and I have about 75 rolls in the house so I'm good.

I am a banker and my branch has a satellite location in a local supermarket. I worked from 930pm to 730am there today to help out due to call outs and I could not believe the lunacy, It went on all day, and was still going on when I set the alarm and locked up with a coworker. A 45,000 square foot market was nearly wiped out. I spent 20 years in retail before joining the bank last summer and all I could think of was, like FF said, a black Friday sale. They have closed school here for next week and the local high school is under quarantine as one kid has the virus so all have been told not to leave there homes. To make matters worse for the market, half of their workforce is those high school kids, so they are slammin' busy and super understaffed.

It's just total and complete paranoia.
The only reason people have to try to "stock up" on anything is because "the mob" is out of control.

Yep, saw their announcement on FB today confirming the show was canned.

Thank God, my wife and I survived the supermarket. It was...damn near panic in the aisles in slow motion. But at least everyone was polite. And yes, TP all sold out there, and every single cart had pallets of bottled water (that one I don't get).
School has been cancelled, which means my wife is off of work since she works for the school district.
We're in pretty good spirits despite being completely broke.

I think the "stocking up" concept is a sort of self medication. People are mentally guarding themselves against it.

Agreed, I don't think that any of us have faced anything that has no vaccine, no cure and no treatment before. Add to that the fact that it can completely overwhelm the health systems that we take for granted;
It all adds up to people feeling very vulnerable so 1364 tins of beans and enough toilet paper to mummify the street makes perfect sense.

That's actually the only way to explain it.
How/why was I able to buy almond milk (I don't do "cow milk" but they had plenty of that too), bread, cheese and a bunch of other "essentials" but not paper towels or toilet paper...makes zero sense. So around here people are stocking up on paper products but apparently not food staples. Go figure. And there weren't even any lines to get in OR checkout...probably because everyone knows there's no TP anywhere in the state.

If you eat that many cans of beans...you are gonna "need" a lot of toilet paper!!!

In Rhode Island, the Blizzard of '78 scarred many folks who were caught unawares. Now, whenever an inch of snow is forecasted anywhere in New England, people around here clean the markets of bread, eggs, and milk. The local Walmart and Stop and Shop markets were absolutely cleaned out of all paper goods, water, pasta, tuna, any and all canned goods, meats, and cereal.
I remember back in college reading some books by an author who lived through the great depression. It was said that he always carried food with him wherever he went the way people nowadays carry a bottle of water. I am an Italian guy from Providence and I had a lot of older relatives (who are gone now) that had the extra room in the basement (or a pantry of the kitchen) that had a year or two worth of canned goods and pasta and water. This is a direct result of what they saw as kids and/or heard about from family regarding the depression.

That's amazing!
It's obviously much worse in your part of the world than it is in mine right now. I half-expected to not be able to buy any form of milk, bread or cheese yesterday when I hit the local grocery store but not only was there a lot of all of the above but I was also able to immediately check myself out. So apparently things aren't perceived quite as "dire" here as they are where you live.
Of course hearing about your plight makes me want to go out and stock up on stuff I actually don't really need for a while which would only feed the general paranoia that's gripping the country right now.

I think of the preppers, and I'm not saying your wrong, Lari, but I then think of the line in Maiden's "Die with Your Boots On: about "predicting war for millions in the hopes that one arises" and then wonder if this is man-made and purposeful? Maybe it's just my paranoid nature? Or, maybe not?

Okay another trip to the supermarket because as it turns out Vitamin D supplements for people who live in countries with no sun is a really great idea with respiratory infections and it just gets worse by the day, the supermarket was the kind of thing I would expect to see in a failed communist state! I have been joking around with this but what I have to say next will be an absolute rant with an unreasonable amount of swearing so I'll put it in a spoiler section, if you don't want to read me completely going off on one don't click it.
Spoiler:
Another reason I went to have a look at the supermarket is because at work this morning one of my colleagues came to me and told me that he may need some time off tomorrow morning as he was really struggling to find baby formula for his newborn. I thought that I would have a look after work to see if I could pick some up for him and my fucking god!! These stupid pricks had almost completely cleared the shelves of baby formula and baby food! You know, the stuff that babies need to fucking stay alive! I can laugh at these cunts building a little playhouse out of fucking toilet rolls and corned beef but this insanity is going to endanger the lives of infants at this rate. I just cannot for the fucking life of me imagine someone being so fucking selfish to stockpile this stuff knowing that other families NEED it, not 'I need a new pair of pants' need but actually fucking NEED it!
I fucking swear if I had actually seen someone doing this I may well have punched them in their fat fucking faces right there and then! Anyway I phoned my colleague and he has managed to track some down after two hours and about six shops!
Hopefully this is just a temporary thing as it's the weekend and they will restock tomorrow and hopefully they will impose limits on buying absolute essentials to stop these ridiculous cunts killing people!

I was reading an article by a psychologist and it seems the pop psychology we've been spouting here is spot on. This is a situation people can do NOTHING about so their displaced anxiety causes them to do ANYTHING just so they feel like they're doing SOMETHING. So stocking up on stuff you don't really need is just a demonstration of that behavior. But you're right, TP is one thing but baby formula is something completely different. Go buy something like pickled eggs or radishes or something if you have to feel like you're doing something.

Ironically enough, last I checked a rock/metal fest in Mexico scheduled for this weekend with the unfortunate name "Corona Hell and Heaven Fest" (sponsored by the beer company) supposedly went on as planned (though I would bet that many of its international headliners have pulled out)...
