| Watched the Pirates beat the Rays last night 6-2. Surprisingly, the bullpen held up to preserve the win since Nova had a shaky game and only pitched 5 innings. | |

| Well that sure was an upside-down series the Cardinals had with AZ. The one game I figured STL would win, they lost. The two games I figured we'd lose, we won. And today was by a 10-4 score.
I still say the Cardinals should be sellers at the trade deadline. This season is a bust. Time to dump the free agents to be and pick up some prospects to build around. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| Watched the Pirates blank the Rays 4-0. Taillon pitched another solid game and got some decent run support. | |

| I was watching the Pirates play the Giants and after taking a 3-1 lead off Toho's buddy Johnny Cueto in the first, things went south for the Pirates rather quickly and they eventually ended up losing 13-5. I turned it off before it got so far out of hand, though.

| Watched the Pirates bumble their waybto another loss again as they fell to the Giants 2-1 in 11 innings. They walked 10 times but only scored 1 run,Kuhl had a no hitter going into the sixth inning before giving up a solo homer, and the bullpen gives up the losing run | |

| I hate bullpen losses. I'd rather get shelled than have the bullpen blow a game late. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| I didn't watch today's game but from what I gather, the bullpen did it again. Granted, Williams had a 2-0 lead but left the game with 2 on and no outs. In comes Tony Watson, who promptly gives up 2 straight singles to tie the game, followed by loading the bases and a sacrifice fly to put the Pirates down 3-2. Eventually the bullpen gave up 2 more runs and the Pirates end up getting swept by the team with the second worst record in baseball. The front office should be ashamed of the dumpster fire bullpen that they are unwilling or unable to address. | |

| I think the problem is that there are a lot of dumpster fire bullpens in the league so there aren't a lot of good relievers available. Look at the Rangers for example. Their bullpen has sucked all year so what did they do? They signed Jason Grilli who the Blue Jays - who also have a terrible bullpen - DFA'd. Grilli is 2-4 with a 6.97 ERA. Would you want the Pirates to sign that? I wouldn't.
The Cardinals are another sucky bullpen but there's no one out there worth signing. I want them to do some internal shuffling and try various minor league starters in the BP role; can't be any worse than what we've been doing. Oh, and get rid of Trevor Rosenthal and Sung Hwan Oh and get whatever prospect we can. Both are FA's after this year so time to sell since this season is a bust. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| Grilli was with the Pirates a few years ago (when the Pirates bullpen was rather good) and was a reliable pitcher. Wonder what happened with him? Back to the current team, I have no idea what's down in the minors, but it can't be any worse than what they have either. | |

| Getting ready to watch the Cards and Nats. STL has won 4 in a row, two over AZ and two over Wash. Yet we get swept by the Reds. Go figure.
Tonight it's Scherzer against Martinez. Should be a good matchup. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| Cards are getting clobbered. 5-0 after three. With Scherzer pitching for the Nats this game is as good as over. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| Just got done watching the D-Backs walk off the Rockies tonight. Finally the Dodgers lost and we won, so we actually gained some ground. Tomorrow is the real test, since we are playing in LA, and we usually get owned in L.A. | |

I watched this game. First couple of innings looked like batting practice for the Nats. Scherzer was on fire too.

| Yeah for my money Scherzer is the best pitcher in the NL. The Cards can handle Kershaw but they did nothing again with Scherzer. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

As a Dodger fan I hate to, but yet I have to agree with you. I think the thing that hurts the Nats the most is that they don't have the most reliable bullpen.

As a Dodger fan I hate to, but yet I have to agree with you. I think the thing that hurts the Nats the most is that they don't have the most reliable bullpen. The Nats absolutely MUST do something about their closer situation. Their lineup can rake and their starting pitching matches up with any team's but their bullpen is ATROCIOUS. BTW, the Dodgers are the favorite team of my 87-year old dad so I have a soft spot for them. Except for Puig; I can't stand him. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

it was funny listening to mark grace talking about Scherzer when he was coming up in the diamondbacks. Grace kept saying what a fine closer max would be one day, because he didn't have enough good pitches to be a good consistent starter. How many cy youngs does he have now? And a perfect game I think? I'd love to ask mark if he regrets being so stupid.

| How the Cardinals let Scherzer get away is beyond me. He grew up in Chesterfield, MO which is where I lived for the first 10 years after I moved here from Connecticut. The Cards at least drafted him but it was right out of high school and Scherzer decided to go to Mizzou instead. Then the Dbacks scarfed him up. Man that guy sure would look good in a Cardinal uniform now. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.
