I had the first Vio-Lence album, the vocalist sucked so bad it immediately went into the "to trade in" pile.
Forbidden I barely remember.
In the 80s I was primarily into the usual suspects (The Big 4+ Overkill and Testament) and also Destruction, Kreator, Sodom, Coroner, Whiplash, Nuclear Assault, Possessed, Sepultura, Death Angel, Flotsam, etc. Plus stuff like Celtic Frost and Voivod.

The vocalist did indeed suck but the intense music really made up for it, Forbidden were just straight up greatness.

I'll take a listen to Forbidden tomorrow on my day off. I lived in a small rural town (population 300) when I was a teenager and I had to drive 45 minutes to get to the nearest record store...which was in another small town of only about 30,000...they didn't have the deepest thrash LP collection to choose from in those places.

That's not a town! There's probably more than 300 people living on my Street!

There was only 1 stop light in the entire county.
My neighborhood in Los Angeles is one of the most densely populated in the city, it's only 2 1/2 square miles but has a population of over 120,000. Quite a change of pace from my teenage years.

Okay I'm interested now. That's three of you that think Flynn is an idiot but no explanation as to why you think that. I'm not saying that you are wrong but would be interested to know what he's done to deserve the title of 'idiot'

Much as I'm not a big rap metal/nu metal guy, I actually think that's better than 90% of what I've heard the image is admittedly horrible bandwagon jumping.
That's not really what I'm getting at though Varg Vikernes has at times touched brilliance in his music but it doesn't mean that he isn't an absolute tit. (although the feeling is apparently mutual as I pointed out some of the nonsense of the theories on one of his conspiracy videos and he actually took the time to respond in person and call me a complete idiot )

Forbidden are great S.D! I would think you would dig them. They have similarities to Flotsam, Agent Steel,Toxik. Bay Area Thrash with clean higher pitched vocals.
Anyway back to the thread subject. I'm not a fan of Phil. Never liked his attitude. All this race stuff is getting old. It's what's dividing us as a country. Cant we all just get along!

I always thought Robb Flynn was just another Phil Anselmo (tough guy image) ripoff. Especially during Machine Head's first two albums. Funny how he challenged his idol.
I'm surprised Randy Blythe hasn't chimed in with his big mouth/2 cents...

Phil Anselmo has made a serious of stupid statements to the press in the past, and I remember on the Behind the Music episode dedicated to Pantera, he just came off like stoned moron. I like Pantera's music but never did worship them like a lot of people I knew did. Whatever hopes he had of reconciliation with Vinnie Paul, however small and unlikely that was to be anyway, is I am sure completely out the window.

I remember this being on WAAF a lot back in the day and thought it was an okay song. I honestly had no idea it was Machine Head, though. I really don't know much about Robb Flynn at all other than he has been a member of some seminal metal bands. My comment was based on the video where he presented himself as articulate and well spoken and got an emotional point across. I don't believe Anselmo is an idiot, I think he makes very poor choices.

Some people like Phil Anselmo, Dave Mustaine and Sebastian Bach have a tendency to speak without thinking it through. Phil just happened to strike a major nerve this time.

Phil is just a drunk who says & does stupid shit like this from time to time. Does he really hold racist feelings? Who knows. I seriously doubt that money from Down cd & shirt sales are being funneled back to the KKK though.

I think Phil just likes to push the boundaries of what he can get away with. The guy has hung around all kinds of people over the years... He is even friends with (or at least a friendly acquaintance) of Doug Pinnick. That's hardly something a hardened racist would be willing to do.
Sometimes he plays into the southern white pride thing.

The Burning Red is a fantastic album. No, the look was silly, and the music was clearly an attempt at mainstream success. And it worked on that album. It's great! Flynn fully admits that they sold, that he and the band succumbed to label pressure to change. So they did it, and then had to deal with foolish people calling them "wiggers" and other equally stupid things. (It certainly isn't a reason to call them idiots, especially coming from fashion-stunted metal heads.) The follow-up, Supercharger, showed a band falling apart. They didn't want to do that, but...not so easy when you want to make a living, or when there's cash on the table.
Either way, I've never found Robb Flynn to be an idiot. He seems like a very intelligent, sensible dude. But I guess it's easier for me because I don't give a shit about how people look or what they wear.

Sure it would. Slave owners used to rape slaves. His deep-rooted racism isn't going to keep him away from people of color. He doesn't have a career if he chooses that kind of life.
Is he a full-blown racist? Probably not. But he most definitely is racist to an extent, a much greater extent than most. No one shouts "white power" like that without having some serious hateful feelings toward people of color. That wasn't a joke. That was, because of the alcohol, the real Phil Anselmo coming out.

As I recall, Anselmo was also a huge Mike Tyson fan back in the day. I'm not sure a real racist would look up to a guy that is of a different color.

I always thought it sounded like the jock in the front yard of Eddie Weinbauer's house was shouting "White Power"!
