LOL I actually don't like any of those 4.
At least not when compared to their other work.

You know what I do hate about this new song? They say "moth into the flame," but it's titled "Moth Into Flame." My OCD says that is all kinds of wrong.

I still don't really care for Hardwired, but these past two singles have been stellar. I'm really looking forward to this.

I'm really having a hard time warming up to any of these tracks. I want to be excited that a new Metallica album is on the way, but in my heart I just know I'm going to be disappointed in the long run. These guys just don't do it for me anymore.

Same here. I also find Hetfield's vocals extremely irritating now.

Quite a few of the "old schoolers" of metal are really getting hit-or-miss with me anymore. There was a time when I'd gobble up anything new by them, no questions asked. But now? I dunno.
I thought the last Armored Saint album was outstanding and the recent Death Angel sounds really good to me, as is the new Suicidal Tendencies. Megadeth too. So I know these old farts can put out quality music.
But then stuff like the last Anthrax, Testament and this upcoming Metallica leave me just "meh".

I feel the same, in the general idea that the old bands aren't doing a lot for me mostly, but our picks for best and worst are opposite. I was disappointed with the new Suicidal, indifferent to Megadeth and could not get through the new Death Angel.
I have loved all 3 Metallica tracks and am stoked on the new album and I think the new Testament is one of their best, if not their best, since Souls of Black.
I agree on Anthrax though. Still need to hear the new Saint, forgot all about that.

Once the "newness" of the new Anthrax wore off earlier this year, it went on the shelf and I haven't spun it since. (shrugs)
I haven't had time to listen to "Atlas, Rise" yet but I've liked the other songs Metallica sneak-peeked enough to be mildly curious at best.
Still 'n' all, my "old-school band releasing a kickass new album in 2016" award still goes to Metal Church.

Yea, that's a good example, but they had something to prove with bringing Mike back into the band. And it showed. Megadeth had a new guitarist to inject some energy. Anthrax did it for Worship Music by reuniting with Joey, but then seemed to drop the ball with For All Kings.
Testament made a cool comeback of sorts with Alex Skolnik on Formation. But then they slid a little into repetition with Dark Roots. Now, to me, it's seems like they're cranking out the same old, same old. I don't think it's bad necessarily, but not that exciting enough to me that I feel like I'm missing out.
When Death Angel reunited, they put out a great album or 2 then they tried to latch onto the trend of modern metallers and being "more brutal" and screamy and that lost me. Going back to what they do best, injecting some melody and diversity to their metal, was a nice return on their last album. Which reminds me, I still need to get.
It's all just a matter of opinion for me and I'm going to try and be more critical with the purchases I make. Band loyalty and blind purchases are going to the wayside these days.

It's killer. Way better than La Raza. And I'm one of the few that liked La Raza. I'd have to double-check, but I'm pretty sure it was in my top 5 of 2015 releases.
EDIT: Win Hands Down was my #1 pick for 2015 and looking back over the rest of my choices, I'd still put it there.

Oh yeah, I haven't purchased any of these. I just listen on Spotify, especially with new metal albums. Like Freddy said about Anthrax, my enthusiasm often lasts the first week of release and then I might not re-visit an album again, or at least for a long time. So.

Hmmm....to a degree I agree. I think without Andy Galeon behind the kit they suffer more with their backup vocals. I love Andy's drumming, but I also love what Will Carroll brings. Andy was as important, if not more important than Rob regardiong backup vocals. Without Dennis Pepa on bass, the band has certainly lost that funk/punk vibe. Dennis was also given the freedom to not have to play note for note with whatever Rob/Gus or Ted was playing. I tend to enjoy the looseness with the bands first three records and the first two post reunion records, but my favorite record from beginning to end post reunion is without a doubt "Relentless Retribution". Mark's vocal changes post reunion certainly lend credibility to your views, but I still think the Death Angel guitar tone has never really gone away.

I'm not getting that deep into their band members and what they did or didn't contribute to their sound. It just seemed to me that starting with Relentless Retribution, they went into a more speedy, brutal cacophony of noise and screaming, akin to Lamb of God. Maybe not quite that extreme, but it was a chore for me to get through that album.
Or it's just that I'm getting old and have little tolerance for that stuff anymore. Now excuse me while I go yell at those damn kids on my lawn again.

It's all just a matter of taste I guess. Some folks dig melody. Some don't need it.

The videos keep getting taken down off of Youtube but the track "Spit Out the Bone" is one of the coolest (and heaviest) songs I've heard from them in a very long time.

The new album is like the missing link between the Black Album and Load/Reload. I dig it, but a lot of songs really needed a producer that reined them in, convinced them to cut parts of the songs. A lot of them just go on too long and are too repetitive, like "Seek And Destroy." I imagine this could have been a really great single-disc album if they'd trimmed the songs.
Otherwise I think it's much better than Death Magnetic.
And Lars sucks. He's the weak link here. Absolutely one-dimensional the whole way through. Such a shame.

I agree with all of those points, Eyesore. It's definitely a long listen and the sound of the drums at certain parts are mind-boggling. However, I was expecting much worse. James's performance is especially impressive throughout.

Patchy
You would think that a band that has eight years between albums could bring their A game but there are too many clunkers.
Manunkind, Am I Savage, Murder One, Now That We're Dead and Dream No More could all use the Torben Ulrich treatment!

This is much closer to their A game than Death Magnetic. I love "Now That We're Dead" and "Dream No More" and "Murder One"; they're probably my favorite tracks on the album. They have that Load/Reload feel, which is the kind of music that I think is, so to speak, closer to their hearts at this point. The fans and the demand for them to play old school metal is the problem. I don't think they can do it anymore, not without forcing it.
The album still needed an editor, but the best tracks are the slower ones, in my opinion.
