Curious Alice - 1971 Anti-Drug PSA

I generally hate PSA's because they actually make inviting the very thing the condemn. For instance, all the smoking ads--especially the latest one with the sweet-looking swamp monsters--spark this wire in my head for something I gave up years ago. The govt just has no idea how to properly put together a convincing, persuasive public service announcement, or perhaps it's just something that can't be achieved. Anyway, this is the most surreal thing out there, and I wouldn't be surprised if this influenced David Lynch in his craft. Wish I had some shrooms or acid to enjoy this with.

I agree, corpl, it does make the evil more attractive and inviting. I think commercials get it right though by showing the terrible outcome of smoking. I am reminded of the one with that woman, Terri, who was once attractive and vibrant and then they show her now as a dried out husk of a woman. Or the ones a few years ago that had all the body bags.

I have always wondered about the authenticity of these PSA's and are they really put out by people who have our best interest at heart (and not in their pocketbooks) and really want to stamp out these things. It reminds of something I have wondered for years about computer viruses and virus protection. I am not a conspiracy theorist but I wonder if these viruses are created by the people who sell us the "cure."
