AC/DC have confirmed the release of 17th studio album Rock Or Bust on December 1 – and they’ve revealed mainman Malcolm Young won’t return to the band.
He bowed out earlier this year as a result of an unspecified illness, and was replaced in recording sessions by his nephew Stevie. The younger guitarist will take part in the Aussie giants’ 2015 world tour in his uncle’s place.
Columbia records say in a statement: “Rock Or Bust follows the immensely successful Black Ice album, which debuted at number 1 in 31 countries upon release in 2008, and has gone on to sell nearly 8 million copies worldwide.

It will be strange not having Malcolm around - that being said I am anxiously awaiting this release.

I was in my car, speeding, cranking out : AC DC live CD - 'Highway to Hell' with Brian singing - and 'For Those About To Rock' - on a great September day too - windows down - and a thought did cross my mind - are they going to tour again - " ( say your city ) we salute you " that's an easy 2 1/2 year long tour around the world - how much is left in the tank - no pun attended. Also, they had ample time to fine tune the chosen songs - 60 months or so - in the making - I wonder, and I'm not smiling when I say this...if they will have a 'devil' song. I always thought this tune was like " The Crossroads" - rain / riegn - foreboding - omminus - " May-Day " - isn't that said in a walkie talkie - when a person is in serious trouble.

I'll give it a listen and I'll most likely enjoy it. 8 million for Black Ice is frankly staggering numbers in this day and age. I sometimes forget just how popular this band still are!

Reports are that Malcolm's suffering from dementia.

I don't believe we'll see those numbers again. Allot has changed since 2008. AC/DC had a huge push from Walmart at the time. They were practically handing out a copy with every purchase.
When is that last time a rock band has sold over a million albums in recent memory? Even big acts are topping out at 75,000-100,000 from what I can tell. The Black Keys had a Number 1 album and "only" sold 328,000.

Singles still go platinum, pop & country albums still go platinum, but looking through the certifications handed out in 2014 I cannot find a single "rock" album in the bunch. Not one.
AC/DC is a global act, so it's quite possible their sales in other countries outside the US will still rake in the big dough.

Yep - I'd love to see the numbers, but I would bet the bigger global hard rock/metal acts can still sell a million copies worldwide...... I wouldn't be surprised if it's like the movies, where a larger chunk of revenue is worldwide (especially with the huge flops in the US)

Another thing people forget is that Gold and Platinum certifications by the RIAA are "US sales" only, if band sells 500,000 copies in the US and 5 million in the rest of the world they will still only qualify for a Gold record from the RIAA.
Record sales in the US have declined at a much steeper rate than many other countries.
As for movies, the recent figures are that only about 40% of the revenue generated from Hollywood films are from the US market, 60% is coming from overseas and that number continues to grow. Chinese and Russian markets are the ones Hollywood is catering to now.

I wonder what the digital sales of that album by The Black Keys was. Those numbers probably only counted physical copies. I just checked the Facebook page of The Black Keys, and they have almost 5,000,000 likes. I saw an article where Michael from Stryper was talking about how Facebook likes don't translate into record sales being the same.

For the umpteenth time...
DIGITAL SALES ARE COUNTED BY THE RIAA, buying an album on iTunes counts exactly the same as buying a physical copy at Wal-Mart.

According to teh interwebs, The Black Keys album sold 328,000 in the States, plus an additional 40,000 in Canada and 100,000 in Great Britain. Not too shabby for a popular rock act in 2014, but still shy of 8 million.
It'll be interesting to see what kind of numbers AC/DC can post with this new album. They still are still one of the last hold-outs from itunes too, aren't they?
EDIT: Nope, my bad. AC/DC' entire discography became available on itunes in November of 2012.
