What is the most physical pain you have endured?

Mine isn't nearly as life-threatening as James or Monty (thank F*ck for that).

Years ago I broke all 5 toes right up in the middle of my foot.  The first 2 were shattered, the other 3 were clean offset breaks.  A 100kg cast iron tyre mold fell over on my foot.  I had surgery to clean the first 2 bones up, and then had 5 metal pins inserted into my foot to hold it all together until the bones healed.  Fun part was when one of the pins got infected...

Probably the worst was a hip injury I got playing football.  Muscle/ligaments tore off of my iliac crest and pulled pieces of bone off of my hip.  That hurt like hell and I was on crutches for months.  The rehab was excruciating and reduced me to tears on a regular basis.  Electro-galvanic stimulation is the worst.    

Took shrapnel to the hands and face when bullet fragments came off of some HMMV armored plate. That hurt a bit.  

Took a snow shovel to the face when I walked behind my brother when shoveling.  That hurt.

The shrapnel thing was a few years ago in a shooting competition.  We use scrap pieces of Humvee armor (The Ogara Group is a local company and they give us the armor for minimal cost) Some bullets hit an angled piece of Humvee armor and shattered.  The shrapnel from that (bits of the bullet jacket, bits of bullet and some pieces of armor (spall) came off and flew at me.  They hit me in my hands and face.  I had Eye Pro on so my eyes were safe.  Most of the facial hits were in my cheek.  The shrapnel also hit my hands.  I had some of my thinner gloves on (not the gloves with any armor/kevlar in them) and the pieces of shrapnel hit in between a couple of my fingers.  I was still shooting so I didn't notice until afterwards and blood was all over my gloves and pistol.  The hand stuff is what hurt.  Ah well, no big deal really.  You sometimes get this in competitions if the armor isn't angled correctly or is somehow defective.  Usually the shrapnel won't even break the skin, but this was a freak accident.

When I was about seven, I was at a camp and I stepped behind a mule (despite being warned) and got kicked right in the mouth. A lot of blood poured out and I lost some teeth, but somehow I didn't get knocked out.

I used to work in bail enforcement & recovery. I was shot when we took down the door of a guy we were trying to bring in. My vest slowed it down enough to protect my spine. Total recovery time was almost 2 years though.

I got out of that line of work in early 2013.

It was a .45 caliber. No, that wasn't what made me get out of that line of work. My wife got her teaching certificate in 2010 & stopped working with me. She also started pressuring me to do something less risky. Not only that, but I was tired of the numerous civil suits I was being subjected to.

Nah, the monkey bit my finger (true story). The dog attacked a buddy and me. He sunk his teeth into my thigh and bit my scrotum. The dog, not my buddy. Thankfully, is was just a surface wound. He didn't puncture the apple sack or it's contents.

Oh yea, it's no walk in the park, lemme tell you. I felt the "pinch" and then when the dog was pulled away I reached in my pants and pulled out a bloody hand. I thought I was gonna pass out like Gordie when he pulled the leech off of his junk in 'Stand By Me'. Got a pretty good gash on my upper thigh too.

If there was any good that came from it, the dog was put down (it was his 3rd strike apparently) and my wife (fiancee at the time) had to gently apply Neosporin to my testes for a good week or so. And she doesn't bite.

I can partially relate, MG. I got mauled by a pack of 4 dogs. Took a nice sized chunk of my ass. So thankful they avoided the naughty bits.

When I was maybe eight or nine years old, I was riding my bike around the back of the local mini-mall and noticed a dirt path that seemed to lead off into the woods. I started down it and realized too late that the path ended at the top of a brick wall that surround the mall's Dumpster. I flew off the top of the wall and dropped about eight feet to the pavement on the side of my face. I suppose I'm lucky I didn't plow into the dumpster head first cuz I then might not even be here today.

To make matters worse, I was alone, and in fact I was not even supposed to be at said mini-mall at the time (I'd told my parents I was going to the park, which was closer to home). So I had no choice but to get back on the mangled bike and ride back home, bleeding and screaming the entire way. By the time I pulled into my driveway and collapsed on the front lawn my face & clothes looked like I was in a zombie movie.  

I have only vague memories of the trip to the ER, but my parents told me afterward that I screamed till my voice gave out while the doc's cleaned me up and pulled a variety of gravel, dirt, and other flotsam out of the side of my face, which took a couple of hours. I ended up with just a couple of stitches at the corner of my mouth. I got off light!!

By the way, it was YEARS before I finally told my parents the truth about where I'd been on that day. (I gave them some quickie BS story about falling off the bike path at the park into the woods and smacking my face on a tree, or some such nonsense)... my Mom, of course, told me "Yeah, we pretty much knew you were full of sh*t but we figured you'd been punished enough." Haha

I had this happen when I was in 7th grade. I found out a few years later just how close I came to dying. The infection from the appendix abscessed and was contained in my abdomen. The surgeon was able to get most of it during the surgery. Had it spread throughout my system... I was in the hospital for 9 days as it was (this was 35 years ago or so). That was pretty bad as far as pain goes. It may have been topped about 12 years ago when I had an inner ear infection that ruptured my ear drum. Not fun at all.

I think modern medicine has come a long way since our grade school years. But the docs told me the same thing. Couple of more hours and I would be one dead Uncle.

Here's another one...
I was on a vacation sometime in my early teen years. There was a somewhat steep little hill that had a wooden gate at the bottom with small openings probably the width of a door frame. I got the bright idea to go down the hill on my bike and make it through one of the openings. Well I lost control and crashed into one of the posts. Obviously it hurt pretty bad!

I had to hear Toho sing   

i had surgery and the the staples ripped. It was horrible.
