I just acquired an album called aftermath by warning sf, a band I had never heard of before.
Great cd. Not sure if it is easy to find.

Certainly valid points from the anti-sub genre committee...but yeah, like Witchfinder said, there is too little time to look into every band.
On this board alone, not counting suggestions from anywhere else, I see tons of bands daily listed that I've never heard of. I'm not going to go and listen to all of them. Just not. But when people throw a little category at me, then I'll check out the ones I think I might like.
Or, like Corplhicks said, a direct band comparison.band mash-up works too.
And again, I like metal. But not all metal. So...sub genres make the whole thing easier.

I would argue that people do the subgenre stuff more these days because listeners have become wusses and aren't allowed to listen to something that has X or Y element... so they too need the tags to know what to blindly avoid.
Yup, that's the one!
I don't mind all of the sub genre's all that much, as an indicator to people who haven't heard the records. It's when it descends into pointless arguments about what band fits what sub genre by people who already know what the band sounds like.

Once you get too many sub genres the original genre basically ceases to exist. These days you can't just say a band plays "heavy metal", that term has almost no meaning because of all the sub genres.

Subgenres are just there to make everything easier.
I don't approve of those one band genres though. But if it's something that instantly gives me an idea of the band's influences, like US Power Metal, it does help me a lot. If the band is called Nu-Metal or Electronica or Hardore, I will probably know it's safe to skip it. It doesn't mean all those bands suck. Just that I'm less likely to find music I will enjoy in that bin.
How would you like it if in record stores they'd just pile everything in one big section? Alphabetical order... Abba, A Perfect Circle, Ayreon, Alanis Morrisette, AC/DC, Paula Abdul, Alphaville, Alter Bridge, Clay Aiken, Avenged Sevenfold, Martin Agricola, Annihilator...

Luckily it's not too rare, because what I've hear from it thus far is incredible.
I have no idea how I have not heard of these guys before until just now, especially when they're from the US.

I am just so alone with my opinion of No Exit. To me it does not belong in that list at all. My brain is twisted in a painful knot as to why that album is so revered. I don't get it.
