Two episodes of "Bates Motel" ... sh*t is gettin' real up in there. I'm bummed that there are only two more episodes left in this season.
I'm enjoying the series but I'm also a little frustrated by it. I think there are too many characters involved for only a 10-episode series, feel like it should be at least 13 episodes (which is standard for half-season series). We're 8 episodes in and so many of the characters have had minimal screen time that it's hard to tell exactly where they are going with things. I like the feel of the show and I also enjoy most of the cast...but it feels like the balance is off somewhere, like they are still trying to figure out the direction and the season is almost over.

The performances in it are outstanding. And it's much more character-driven than the movies I usually enjoy.

"Hit & Run" (2012)
Quirky car-chase comedy about a former getaway driver (Dax Shepard) who jeopardizes his position in the Witness Protection Program by agreeing to drive his girlfriend (Kristen Bell) to L.A. for a job interview. Pursuing them along the way are his former partners in crime looking for a bit of payback, and a determined Federal Marshal (Tom Arnold), to name just a few. Funny stuff, with lots of snappy dialogue and cool stunt driving.

Lots of fun. Dax wrote and co-directed the film, it was fun seeing him star alongside his real-life significant other Kristen Bell. The film was made with a minuscule $2 million budget, I think they spent the money wisely.

Side Effects (Steven Soderbergh, 2013)
Typically excellent Soderbergh film, highly recommended. Intelligent script with many twists/turns and great performances from Jude Law and Rooney Mara really push this one over the top. Soderbergh has stated that this will be his last film for quite awhile (he wants to explore other art forms), I really hope he changes his mind because he's one of the best directors of the past 25 years.

The Taint. Troma film. I always go into these expecting a fun time and come out feeling like I truly wasted valuable time. Anyway, this one's a debut from two college mates about tainted water supply turning men into misogynistic zombies. OTT gore and genital display, highly irreverent, has a very Parker-Stone vibe, a lot of set-pieces designed for shock but merely come off as campy or just gross. The youtube trailer will give you a good idea of what you're in for. Troma movies: if it quacks like a duck...

The Place Beyond The Pines (2013)
Very good, very heavy drama. Bradley Cooper puts in another impressive performance. Interesting music score by Mike Patton (Mr. Bungle/Faith No More).

I was curious about something with this one; was Gosling's performance similar to his role in Drive? Even the basic plot points that I know of seem to line up.
Knowing that Patton did the score is enough for me to want to watch it.
