Does anyone else agree the early JP albums were pretty weak? Seems like very average hard rock music of its time, really.

Anyone going to defend them?

The album was typical 70's fare - after that it was a killer catalogue up to Turbo. I stopped listening to them after that.

This is slightly relevant... "(Take These) Chains" has to be one of my favorite Priest songs. I love that chorus so much.

I used to not like that song. I guess I thought the "take them off of my heart" line was cheesy. I listened to it a few months back, though, and I really started to like it. I actually like everything but the chorus, though, LOL.

It looks like I'm the only one who thinks 'Hell Bent/Killing Machine' is fairly awful. I honestly don't care about 3/4 of the songs on that record. If I wanted to hear Boston (and I don't), I would just..go about my daily life I guess, since you can't get away from them. Judas Priest, YU do this to me? 'British Steel' is surely better.

Boston?

You guys are just nuts!

"Delivering the Goods" "The Green Manalishi (with the Two-Pronged Crown)", "Burnin' Up", "Running Wild", "Evil Fantasies", "Rock Forever", "Hell Bent for Leather"...

Great songs! Classic! Heavy! Friggin'! Metal!

So, now all of a sudden not only are their early albums "typical 70s fare" but Hell Bent For Leather and British Steel suck as well?

Clueless seems to be contagious.

Ult: I didn't think it mattered, just songs like 'Rock Forever' and 'Evening Star' and, to a lesser extent, 'Take On The World' (that one also reminds me of Queen), just give me the vibe of that first Boston record a LOT. It doesn't have to have the same production or et al.... there are just a lot of riff ideas and vocal ideas in some of the songs that steer way close to that album for my tastes. 'Hell Bent For Leather' is one of those albums the skip button was invented for, for me.....

oh, I do also really like 'Before the Dawn', though it wasn't in your list. Razz

S.D. buddy, let's really not refer to me like that because I've got a mind of my own, yeah? I don't think 'British Steel' sucks, it has it's share of 'single' tracks but it does not suck and it certainly doesn't make me think typical 70's fare, though I'll allow that that's in reference to someone else. Check my list also please.... the top 5 Priest for me are 70's through 'Defenders', which I absolutely have to include for a myriad of reasons including, but not limited to: insane guitars, unstoppable riffs, terrible production which manages to amplify the atmosphere, and the most 'serious' of their 'cheesy' lyrics.

Tellin' ya, you guys sometimes...

I was not AROUND when many of these records came out, BUT I discovered the 'Metal Works' set when I was but an 8 year old OCI, and most of my favorite tracks were stuff from the 70's period, and I know every record I own, including Priest, literally inside and out, so yeah, I do feel that clueless or similar is not the first (or last) descriptive to use in assessing my opinion.

I somewhat agree with OCI on this. But in all honesty, what does it matter what I (or from my perspective, you guys) think of an album you/I like? As long as you/I enjoy it, isn't that all that matters?

I don't think either of us once said that Hell Bent or British Steel sucked; as for myself, all I said was that I grew tired of Hell Bent, and thought that British Steel was overrated. I enjoy both to a certain extent, though. They're not terrible albums by any means.

I really think perspective plays a large role here, views about the early Judas Priest albums are going to differ between people that heard them when they originally came out and those hearing them for the first time 10, 20 or 30 years later. I'm totally guilty of forgetting that myself sometimes when I have trouble relating to how younger people view albums I heard when I was 11 or 12.

Okay - but I've NEVER been attracted to rock that swang over to some of the boogie style stuff. EVER. Remember.... I didn't have X modern thing and X modern thing to compare Metal Works with when I was 8-9. I literally jumped headfirst into rock music with classic heavy metal and hard rock. I also had a Styx compilation, and once again, I gravitated to the real beefy stuff, 'Suite Madame Blue', 'Blue Collar Man', 'Pieces of Eight'....... That's my personality, see, there's no way that 'Rock Forever' would ever be my favorite Priest track no matter when I was born. I will always get down to 'Running Wild'... 'Steeler'..and so on...........'United'? 'Burnin' Up'? Not so much..

I can see the drums and guitar at the begining sounding like maybe "Rock And Roll Band" by Boston, but the guitar riff and triplets when the verse kicks in is more Scorpions-ish (IMHDO) The harmony lead is way more akin to Wishbone Ash than the "effect" used by Boston.

Never liked HBFL and SFV that much. Sin After Sin and especially Sad Wings were on heavy rotation some 5 years ago with me.
Painkiller is good but not as good as most people say, Turbo is not as bad.

I was wondering if it's already been "legalized" in Norway......

I never understood what was so wrong with Turbo. SFV is one of their weaker albums.

Just to add insult to injury Laughing very hard

In the above clip I posted of "Rock Forever", from the o:12 mark untill Halford starts singing, you can hear a Boston vibe in the drims and chord progression. I am NOT saying it is a Boston influence, it is something I never noticed till OCI brought it up.

I dig "Rock Forever"......The way Halford wails and holds the note at the end of the chorus is so headbanger

I've actually never met a Priest fan that felt that Screaming for Vengeance is a weak album.

For me, "Screaming For Vengeance" is one of those albums that defines exactly what heavy metal is. "The Hellion/Electric Eye" is absolutely brilliant. I remember the first time we played that record, our jaws hit the floor. There's not a song on the album that I don't sing along to and headbang to. Again, perhaps it's perspective and nostalgia. I was hugely into that album when it came out, so it will always sit in my mind as essential heavy metal.

Yeah, I agree. There is no denying that Screaming For Vengeance has been overplayed through the years thus I don't listen to it as often anymore, but the quality of the album I have never questioned.

In my mind it's the last truly great Judas Priest album and also the last one where I like every song on the album.

or maybe it's the bass line ?

"my neighborhood" Laughing very hard closest neighbor is mile and a half away and the next one after that is about 5 miles away. The closest town is 12 miles away and it has a whoppin 200 people in it. What really sucks is that I can't go down to the neighborhood 7/11 for a slurpee either \'arry \'eadbanger

anyways, I can hear it, a slight Boston vibe. You can pick 20 seconds from ALOT of songs and say it sounds like somebody else. So I don't see the big deal.
