That shows how much Miramax knows; as kaiju movies in general and Godzilla movies in particular go, I think this is one of the better ones.
It is one of the better ones from that era...but let's be honest here, to the average (non-Kaiju geek) filmgoer it's pretty silly and probably would have flopped in the theater if it had been released that way. Dubbed films are always a tough sell in the States, add some of the goofier action sequences and the concept of Godzilla fighting a big rose and I think it would have been doomed at the box office. Miramax probably made the right decision at the time.
Godzilla 1985 was a domestic flop so I was surprised to hear that Biollante was ever planned at all.
Even Godzilla 2000 failed to get interest only managing $10 million in the box office on its quick theatrical run. They originally had a deal to release 3 of the millennium films in the states but after G2K's poor showing the plan was cancelled.
I'm not saying the films are bad, I'm just saying the audience for them is very niche.
No argument of your assessment from me.
While ordering Biollante I also picked up a couple of other G movies missing from my DVD collection:
What sucks is that there's no Japanese soundtrack with subtitles on these so you have to listen to the atrocious dubbing (especially on G vs KG; the dubbing is really awful). But I guess it's better than the VHS copies I had.

Gangs Of New York
This happens a lot to me during this time of year. The Cardinal game ends and I flip over to my local Fox affiliate to wait for the local news and they're showing some movie I've never heard of. Today it was Gangs Of New York and I caught the last 20 minutes or so. I looked it up on IMdb and it sounded good so I checked Amazon and picked it up for 1 cent plus 3.99 shipping.
This is about the 15th movie I've bought because of the same scenario.

Yesssss!!!!!!
I got one of my 'holy grail' items!
On my really want list, this was just behind Rose McGowan and just ahead of world peace!
It was pretty expensive (£107, inc the postage) but for an extremely limited 4 DVD, 5 CD combo, signed by the man himself, not that bad (the cheapest on Amazon is twice that)
Better go to work now and earn some money!!

It's 4 DVDs, 5 CDs, and the autograph. That averages to slightly over 10 for each disc. Even without the going rate being 2X as much I'd say you got a great bargain for a holy grail item. That's how I'd rationalize it anyway - congrats!
From Hastings
Was hoping to wait for a Friday The 13th boxset but at four dollars for each I couldn't resist.

I sampled some of it on youtube and it sounded way too good to pass up. Going to give it a run through on my brother's 3-D setup at some point.
