After Dio fired Campbell, it seems Viv Campbell was at loose ends. First he joined Riverdogs, not a bad band that made one album that was lumped with the metal genre, but they were not a metal band. Next he formed a supergroup with Lou Gramm of Foreigner called Shadowking, which is pretty damn good AOR band, but that lasted one album.
Somewhere along the way, or somewhere inbetween he was in Whitesnake, before he was canned.
He was in Whitesnake before he was in Riverdogs or Shadow King, but he never recorded with them...he also played on Lou Gramm's solo album 'Long Hard Look'...
I couldn't remember when he was in Whitesnake, then I remembered he was on the 1987 tour. I have that Riverdogs, I have not played it in forever and a day

It wasn't disco or punk, which were the popular forms of music at the time. Heavy Metal was proclaimed as dead by 1980, but England had a bunch of bands starting this new heavy metal movement. That Leppard now denies being part of that musical movement is pathetic IMO.
I see it more as a case of them not necessarily intending to be a part of it, but they inadvertently ended up a part of it because of timing....AND, because they were included, it places/placed certain expectations upon them in the eyes of the fans that they have no interest in adhering to.

Here's a bit a trivia for you, he actually did record one thing with the band. The video version of Give Me All Your Love features a solo re-recorded by him. Check it out:

If you'd like to buy it, it's actually on this collection:
It's called "Give Me All Your Love (Single Version)"
This thread reminds me that I need to listen to some more Whitesnake.

Agreed. However, whether they like it or not and for better or for worse they were one of the biggest bands to come out of the movement and they directly and indirectly influenced a ton of bands, producers, record companies, etc.
I have no problem with them saying we were a more melodic band than many of the bands coming out of England in the early 80's NWOBHM movement. I don't care if they were influenced by Slade, Mott the Hoople, Thin Lizzy, Sweet, etc. Many NWOBHM bands were. Many American metal bands were as well.
What I don't understand is those ridiculous quotes from around the time of "Slang" until now about how they were never really a metal band, they were never really part of that scene, we were always just a pop band, etc. etc. etc. Why deny your roots? Why back peddle? Why not just be honest and say, yes those were our roots but now we are experimenting with these new sounds and new styles and new techniques?
Just my opinion. I'm obviously one of those who bought their first couple albums during that metal explosion in the 80's and who was expected something from them that they didn't want to be.

Maybe they meant they started out as a heavy metal band but didn't really consider themselves one anymore. Also keep in mind the band was going through some pretty dark times during the Slang era, Collen was going through a divorce, Savage was battling with Bell's Palsy and his father died, Allen and Elliot both got arrested, etc, so with all that maybe the band just wanted to put the past behind them and said things they didn't really mean.

The thing I remember regarding Vivian, and his firing from Whitesnake, were basically due to him being a gigantic pain in the ass. That says something, considering the giant pain in the ass title usually goes to that of David Coverdale. Here's a little something I found that piggyback's on what I said:
After a successful lengthy tour thoughts began to turn to the next record and very soon came the first casualty. Vivian Campbell was fired from the band. DC had tried, painstakingly, to get him to submit new material. When he finally presented some songs they were more in the line of what U2 were doing. Adrian Vandenberg was later to tell of how Campbell also surrounded himself with people who tended to poke their noses into things that were not their concern.

Well, I guess Viv has learned his lesson and would not submit prime songs w/o solid notary-verified contract on hand Good for him

From what I remember of an interview Coverdale did a few years back, I think another factor Vivian was shown the door was due to ego/attitude in addition to the creative/financial side of things.

According to that website, Tawny was dating O J Simpson at the same time she was married to Coverdale, which sounds, er dangerous!

Viv's tribute band, Last In Line, is recording an album...
Quote :
Last In Line, featuring original Dio members Vivian Campbell, Vinny Appice, Jimmy Bain and Claude Schnell along with vocalist Andrew Freeman, have signed with Frontiers Music to release a new recording in the spring of 2015. An unmixed snippet of a new song entitled "Devil In Me" can be heard at www.facebook.com/lastinlinerocks.
Meh.
