Strange is not the word for it!!

I just watched TODAY I WATCHED (TV-series, Movies, Cinema Playlists) 2012 - Page 37 220px-Mirror_Mirror_FilmPoster

which makes mario brothers look normal...

Yeah, my sister and her kids are in love with that one but I still don't know what I thought of it. I think I'd prefer Snow White And The Huntsman.

BTW, apparently the woman playing Snow in Mirror Mirror is the daughter of Phil Collins.

"Alligator" (1980)

Urban "Jaws" variation in which a baby alligator, flushed down the toilet, grows to immense size in a city sewer system after feeding on illegally-dumped test animals, then breaks out and begins snacking on the city residents. As the body count rises, a disgraced cop and a reptile expert team up to take the critter down.

Cult creature feature starring Robert "The Black Hole" Forster and Henry "Ocean's 11" Silva (who's a hoot as a big game hunter brought in to try and kill the 'gator) was written by John "Eight Men Out" Sayles.

This movie scared the crap out of me when I first saw it years 'n' years ago (I was about 12 years old) and it still holds up as a cool killer-creature flick.

Alligator is a lot of fun and was intentionally very tongue-in-cheek. Sayles intention for the script was to be a send-up of monster films in general.

Watch it back to back with something like Prophecy (1979) which is unintentionally, hilariously bad for a good example of how smart Alligator actually is.

Oh yeah, "Alligator" is very tongue in cheek. It was years before I got the gag about the missing sewer worker being named "Ed Norton" Laughing very hard And there's tons of little bits like that in this flick.

I haven't seen "Prophecy" in dog years. Might be something to re-visit in the future.

"Fanboys" (2009)

In 1998, four friends and lifelong "Star Wars" geeks embark on a cross country trip from Ohio to San Francisco... hoping to break into George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch and get a sneak peek at "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace" before anyone else. Naturally, they encounter numerous obstacles - including run-ins with law enforcement, crazed pimps, and angry Trekkies - along the way.

Hilarious "nerd comedy" packed with tons of in-jokes for fans of Star Wars and sci-fi in general. Two appendages up. Laughing very hard

The chunky dude "Hutch" who was driving the van totally reminded me of a guy I hung out with in college, who was indeed a massive Star Wars fan. The resemblance was almost spooky, except for the fact that my buddy wasn't a Rush fan.

Which reminds me, that was a great line: when the car-salesman guy is looking thru the box of cassettes (!) in the van when they head out on the road, and they're all Rush. He sez "All you've got is Rush? How'bout some variety?" and Hutch sez "Rush *IS* variety, b*tch!" Laughing very hard

Shoot, the whole hare-brained scheme seemed like something my college friends and I would've tried to pull off.

I loved it, and will probably be buying my own copy in the near future!

Some interesting tidbits about Fanboys.

Filming was completed in 2006, but it wasn't released until 2009. During that time extensive reshoots were done because the Weinsteins wanted all the cancer references removed...which caused a ton of complaints...so in the final released version most of those scenes were put back in.

Evidently the released film is still quite different from the original cut. The DVD has several bonus scenes that were actually part of the original version.

The music for the film was composed by the lead singer of Devo.

The coffee shop in the film is named "Java The Hut", that was also the name of the coffee shop Kristen Bell worked in on season 2 of Veronica Mars.

Several actors scenes were cut from the film, including a cameo by William Katt (who auditioned for the role of Luke Skywalker in the first Star Wars)

The Hutch character was originally intended for Jorge Garcia, but scheduling conflicts with LOST forced them to recast the actor.

Mark Motherbaugh (sp?) does quite a bit of that these days from what I understand. When he's not doing picture-pages on Yo Gabba Gabba that is.

'Hutch' (aka Dan Folger) does a decent Sam Kinison for a movie ('Brother Sam') that's lingering in development hell at the moment.

I saw that in the theater when it came out and my reaction was WTF WAS THAT?

Does it make more sense now?

It made sense to me when I first saw it when I was 11. Very Happy

It's a surreal film, like most of Ken Russell's work. I've also read the novel so that probably helps my understanding of it. The new blu ray print looks fantastic and it's hard to find a more intelligent sci-fi film from that era, or one with that high caliber of a cast.

If it was released now it would be described as "art house". It reminds me of 2001 in certain aspects, especially how the story is left up to the interpretation of the viewer instead of being 100% literal and spoon-fed the way most films are today.

My favorite Ken Russell film is Lair Of The White Worm. There are surreal images but the film at least makes sense.

Damn, I haven't seen "Altered States" in twenty-plus years. I was in my teens when i saw it on cable back in the day. I don't think my mind was quite ready for Ken Russell back then. Haha
