The Smithereens - A Girl Like You
I never gave these guys the time of day because they were too alternative/college radio oriented for me back in the day. I was so "metal" But I sure loved this tune enough to buy it on a cassette single...

Sitting in Starbucks having coffee with my homie and "Mustang Sally" by Wilson Pickett comes on. I totally forgot about this song and how good it is.
Which reminds me of...
Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels "Devil with a Blue Dress On/ Good Golly Miss Molly". I wish that I had not forgot about those two gems.

Neither have I. I don't even know what made the song pop into my head yesterday morning. Weird. Good tune though.

So I was reading the book I Want MY MTV and in it Tom Petty was complaining about making videos. Then this morning this song randomly came up on my ipod. One of my all time favorite videos (even if Petty detested everything about them).

Seen this video a couple of months ago, then forgot about it until hearing the song recently on a "best songs of the '80s" compilation video, so I thought I'd put it here.
Another one which I only discovered recently, but it kinda fits the vibe of the thread, so I'll post it as well:

"Taken In" by Mike + The Mechanics. I've always loved this song, the video has a funny cameo by Richard Belzer.

I love those Mike & the Mechanics albums. Ignored them at the time. Got them at a thrift store just for the hell of it. And ended up really surprised how great I found them. Dig that song, love the sax snaking through it. Good stuff.
As big a fan as I am of the Go-Gos, Gina Schock's side project House Of Schock for me tops anything the Go-Gos did.

That song is just soooo 70's-AM-soft-rock-radio at it's finest. And I mean that as a compliment. Tesla did a nice cover of this on their last album...
Did the Climax Blues Band have any other hits or were they a one-hit wonder?

Hmmmm, while technically a "hit", I'm gonna say "NO" on that one. Sounds very disco-oriented. I could see folks getting funky to this.

Yeah, that's a typical "white dudes try to play funk" track that just doesn't work. I know the song but never knew they did it. That song is almost as lame as Dr. Hook was when they suddenly became a disco band in the late 70s.
