| The Porcupine Tree concert video "Anesthetize" was released in a double-disc set containing both a blu ray and a DVD (best way to sell them IMHO). This allowed for very easy side by side comparisons.
The blu ray video had much better black level and no digital pixelation around the edges, much sharper. The audio on the DVD is standard 16-bit/48khz and sounded really good...the audio on the blu ray is 24-bit/96kkhz and is much more immersive and detailed, kind of like going from 2-D to 3-D, a much greater sense of ambience and with improved definition of the individual instruments.
The DVD is perfectly acceptable and I think most people would be pleased with the quality, but for those of us that really notice the details, the blu ray is by far superior.
...sorry this thread got so derailed...

Blu-Ray, 5.1, yadda yadda...all that means is I have to spend more money to try and enjoy something I already enjoy plenty for me. Anyone can see the difference between blu ray and DVD, I could show a side by side comparison to just about any person on the street and it would be very obvious.
Let me rephrase...I just don't care. I have a "good enough for me" threshold and DVD (using an HDMI cable hooking up to an HDTV) is good enough for me. I don't feel like I'm missing anything and I don't feel the need to spend money in an attempt to somehow enjoy it "more". That's how I feel about the whole blu-ray thing. Can I tell the difference? Yes. I've seen the side-by-side comparrisions and I notice a difference when I see a shop display with all the bells & whistles. And it does look good. But do I need it? The answer is no. Do I need to spend the money to get that experience when I'm watching 'Full Metal Jacket' for the 56th time? What I have is good enough for me. I would only make the upgrade when and if I had to. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. What I saw: - Quote :

- Shadowangel, older movies look fantastic on blu ray...but it depends on how well the film was cared for and what type of film was used (Technicolor film looks fantastic and barely degrades...though many movies from the late 70's and early 80's used the inferior Eastmancolor process which degrades badly).
The best looking transfer I have ever seen is "The Shining" on blu ray, I've seen the movie in the theater multiple times, on VHS, on DVD...but that blu ray just floored me, it was like watching it for the first time again. In fact all the Kubrick movies look great on blu ray.
B&W white films also look amazing on blu ray.
Primarily the films that look bad on blu ray were films where the technical quality wasn't so hot in the first place. The Shining is one freaky movie. I love all the small things that Kubrick did to make the viewer feel unsettled.

| I will get a blue ray when I'm making better money or the prices of the player drop around $50. The only movies I would upgrade to are the Lord Of The Rings movies. | |

thats the worst part - upgrading to movies i have already seen. I know some of them are better but one can only buy the same movie so many times... _________________

This surprises me as well. Are you sure there are "actual sales" and they're not the million Best Buy had to purchse for their exclusive deal? I believe that's the kicker. They "sold" a million copies to Best Buy (though first week actual sales were in the 200k range). It's like when KISS would ship gold or platinum. This is why they are so cheap and have ended up at other stores. Can't return 'em. Geffen & Axl took the money and ran.

| I've seen/compared Blu-Ray movies 'pre-AVATAR' and the improvement seemed not worth it, Lord of the Rings is one of them....however, the difference becomes massive the moment you invest on titles such as 'TANGLED' and 'X-MEN 1st Class' | |

Same story with the Soundgarden album. That was packaged with a new version of Guitar Hero that sold a million copies.
