I dug a hole once on third grade, hoping to reach "CHINA", but I only found an 8 track of "In Rock" by Deep Purple in said hole. Maybe not "METAL", but it was underground. Too bad there not more tapes.

I'm struggling with defining "underground". Lots of major label acts have been mentioned already.
I will try and make a list, but I don't even know what to put on it.

That is where I was at, thus the corny joke
(IMHDO) The replies have been more "OBSCURE" than '"UNDERGROUND". I know from experience that a band has to be "KNOWN" to be even "UNDERGROUND", think about it

Well I went with an approach that is more mathematical. I took what I have rated as 5.0/5.0 on RYM. There's 89 of them currently, and I picked ten from those, the metric being the ten albums with the least amount of ratings on the site (I guess that's a sign of popularity? The number of ratings, regardless of if the ratings are good or bad. The more ratings, the more popular).
In order of least to most popular, I got:
Marshall Law - Razorhead Valley's Eve - Deception of Pain Axxis - Kingdom of the Night II: White Edition Chris Caffery - Faces Impellitteri - Wicked Maiden Axxis - Back to the Kingdom Mystic Prophecy - Fireangel Impellitteri - Eye of the Hurricane Morgana Lefay - Grand Materia Axxis - Paradise in Flames
And if you accept live albums, Annihilator's Double Live Annihilation. But live albums always get less ratings anyway, so I would exclude that.
Runner-ups were Pink Cream 69's Sonic Dynamite and Doctor Butcher's self-titled. And Paradox's Tales of the Weird, and Angel Dust's Enlighten the Darkness etc etc, but those are obviously more popular using this metric I went with.
So there, lots of Axxis and Impellitteri. Go check them out if you haven't already.

Ratt definitely isn’t underground!
Round and Round is in frequent rotation on rock radio.

Many on my list are Christian thrash bands. So by default, they are considered underground. Most mainstream people probably haven’t heard of most (or any) of them.
