| Dark Horseman asked in this thread if any metal bands have been certified gold in the last 5 years. Good question.
Well, I expanded my search at RIAA's database to include any metal OR rock act that may have some relevance to this board and here's what I found:
(All albums are certified Gold unless otherwise noted)
3 Doors Down – s/t 30 Seconds to Mars – This Is War AC/DC – Black Ice (2x Platinum) AC/DC – Iron Man 2 Alice In Chains – Black Gives Way to Blue Avenged Sevenfold – s/t The Beatles – Beatles In Mono (2x Platinum) The Beatles - Beatles In Stereo (3x Platinum) The Black Keys – Brothers The Black Keys – El Camino Bon Jovi – Greatest Hits Bon Jovi – Lost Highway (Platinum) Bon Jovi – The Circle Breaking Benjamin – Dear Agony Bruce Springsteen – The Promise Bruce Springsteen – Magic (Platinum) Bruce Springsteen – Working On a Dream Chickenfoot – s/t Daughtry – Break The Spell Daughtry – Leave This Town (Platinum) Disturbed – Asylum Disturbed – Indestructible (Platinum) The Doors – The Very Best of the Doors Eagles – Long Road Out of Eden (7x Platinum) Finger Eleven – Them Vs. | Thanks for posting that. Quite interesting. I am shocked that the Crue actually went Gold with SOLA. I liked it a lot but I didn't know if it sold well.

| The only album on that list I own is Death Magnetic...of course I have plenty of Zeppelin, Heart, Doors and Santana albums so I don't need those compilations on the list.

Nickelback was named the "Rock Band of the Decade" by Billboard I guess i make some enemies now but: Nickelback is just a 21st Century version of AC/DC: Same song all over again and again (sounds like a Status Quo song) AC/DC know what works, so the don't experiment. Nickelback is the same. Status Quo was also the same after Dog of two heads. They stick to what sells. Nobody can blame them i guess. I'm really surprised about the Eagles being so successful, i bought that album as a gift for my father's birthday (he likes the Eagles...but also CCR, after he saw The Big Lebowskis he understood why i thought it was funny ) and it's a nice album with some great songs (Somebody) but really it's not a album you'd think would sell over 7 millions in the USA alone.

| There are lots of baby boomers out there that love The Eagles. I agree with Tom Waits, who stated the only good use for an Eagles album is keeping the dust off your turntable. |

What makes you think that the CD is something 'special' ?
The only permanent thing in this world is Change And forced change is not all the time good. While DVD is incredibly awesome for me (because the VHS sold here only contained the german overdub audio on movies and DVD gave me a chance to experience the original voices) i would disagree one most else: - Cartridges? Awesome. They work and will continue to work in 30-40 years, as long as you take care, they don't stop to work. Consoles for the past 15 years use CD and DVD or BR discs and they get scratched and may even stop to work. PS2 uses CD-Roms (they are blue) and has a lot of problems reading them. - Audio Cassettes? I take them at least they're analogue, they sound great, have the full range frequency spectrum. I have a 35 year old Santana Best of. "Everythings coming our way" sounds a lot better than on MP3 there - MiniDisc? It was dead on arrival but a interesting concept, could've been great, especially back then. - I wonder why you didn't mention Vinyl? Because it's undeniable better than the digital formats? Because it just sounds awesome? Oh and Betamax was great, it had a better quality than VHS but just like MP3...the cheap crap is what attracts most people because they don't care about quality, they just want to own everything at the cheapest prices and sadly, they win most of the time.

HDtracks is cool - I wish more bands would release music at that high quality. Actually, I would love it if the record labels would start selling albums in Blu-Ray format for those that want to hear high quality recordings

Yep, Beta was the better quality of the two. A couple things happened - Sony invented the BetaMax, JVC the VHS. JVC licensed the technology to other manufacturers so they could also make VCR's. Sony did not license Betamax out and was the only company making Beta VCR's. Because of competition between the companies manufacturing VHS VCR's, the price was able to come down. It also helped that VHS had a longer running time at first. But the decision of Sony not to license the technology out is what killed Beta. Had Sony done what JVC did, it could have gone the other way as Sony was able to lengthen the time on a Beta tape later on and VHS could have died. And that is now the text book case of how to lose a format war. Actually recently the better technology won out - Blu Ray VS HD DVD. Blu Ray had the superior sound and quality and the early adopters wanted the better technology. HD DVD is done, gone, out the window. I waited to see which format would win before I bought a player. Thankfully Blu Ray won.

HD DVD is done, gone, out the window. And yet also Blu-Ray struggles, there's a reason most movie companies for about 2 years now decide to put more Bonus Material on the BR than on the DVD because people still buy DVD. In terms of Quality, BR is great for modern movies, everything from 2005 to today of course looks awesome. Older movies and really old movies on BR either look like complete crap or have no real advantage over DVD. There was that big controversy about the Blu Ray release of Escape from New York and it's crappy picture that looked more like an oversaturated VHS and was clearly inferor to the Digital Remaster DVD Release. HD DVD never had a chance, there ware no real advantages to normal DVDs and most importantly: The Playstation 3 had Blu-Ray capabilities. No console used HD-DVD. There was a add-on planned for the Xbox 360 to give it HD-DVD compatibility but it was too late. It was like the Dreamcast and the PS2 beating it because it had DVD capabilities while nobody except the game companies used the GD-Rom. I don't see much sense in Blu-Ray, i have a Marantz Blu-Ray Player, i have some BR's, most expensive one was that Blade Runnter Ultra-Mega-Super Collection that looks just like the Final Cut DVD, i stick to DVDs, why spend more money on a barely better picture and bonus material you will never watch anyway?

| Shadowangel, older movies look fantastic on blu ray...but it depends on how well the film was cared for and what type of film was used (Technicolor film looks fantastic and barely degrades...though many movies from the late 70's and early 80's used the inferior Eastmancolor process which degrades badly).
The best looking transfer I have ever seen is "The Shining" on blu ray, I've seen the movie in the theater multiple times, on VHS, on DVD...but that blu ray just floored me, it was like watching it for the first time again. In fact all the Kubrick movies look great on blu ray.
B&W white films also look amazing on blu ray.
Primarily the films that look bad on blu ray were films where the technical quality wasn't so hot in the first place. |
