| As far as current live shows go ? Chickenfoot has an advantage over VH because of the possibility that alot of attendees have 30 plus year old memories of a band that was on fire when they hit the stage say back in 1979 or 1981. The Chickenfoot show I saw was ALOT of fun for me but it failed to change my opinion of them as a band. I suppose the "antique" way (flipping lps over and general admission concerts for under 10 bucks) of experiencing a band gives us old farts that nostalgia/warm fuzzy feeling as opposed to what's mostly done nowadays. Ya know, downloading a song or two and checking out the camera phone footage on YouTube of the current overpriced tour. I wish Sammy and his current band the best of luck on their casino/theater tour. Sad how dilussional memories of the band he once fronted has to be the focus of Sammy's interviews and not the music. Which is the valid comparison IMHO. _________________ | |

I had tickets to see VH with Cherone at Wembley Arena - cancelled because "Alex hurt his back". I think it's unfair to blame GC for VH falling apart; Ed and Alex are the name above the door and Ed reckons that the songs are written by him, the singer just puts word over them. Anyway, I actually enjoyed VH III. I'll get my coat now. Edited - Thank goodness, I thought I'd typed "goat" there for a moment.

| I have seen clips with Gary Cherone live with Van Halen, and those shows were cool because Cherone was willing to sing both eras of the band, as far as 'Van Halen III' still do not care for the album. | |

Maybe they should've did a live record (with a few new songs) instead of that III disaster...

| Im torn on the Dave VS Sammy issue. As to demonstrate, here's some of my takes:
Dave-era VH was more musically adventourus and interesting.
Sammy is a way better singer than Dave. Way, way. Even more so today. I have watched several live videos from VH's current tour. Seriously, where's Dave's voice? Its painful to watch and listen to. From that standpoint, the reunion is like fifteen years too late.
As VH has seldom visited my home country, I dont have first hand live comparisons. They were here in 1984, but I was still a tad to young. Then again in 1993, which I went. Great show I thought. By comparing PRO shot footage from the 80's of both era's, I thought VH sounded much better with Sammy. But the set lists obviously preferred with Dave. Visually, both singers were entertaining. I got to see Dave's Skyscraper tour, which was really cool.
The first two Montrose albums are the best albums Sammy has sung on, and quite possibly greater than any VH. Man those were some great Hard Rock.
Chickenfoot VS new VH: nothing from what Ive heard from both has left an exciting impression on me.

You're not alone. I like both eras for different reasons. The melodic hard rock/AOR part of me (these days, I listen to mostly that genre) loves the Van Hagar stuff. While the love of heavy guitar driven music and wanting to have a good time part of me love the origional VH. This is how I look at the above issure: I look at them as two different bands (even though only the vocals changed) and therefor consider it like comparing apples to oranges. In other words, I compare Van Hagar not to the Dave era but to others in the MHR/AOR genre. I actually do this anytime a band changes key members and their sound, I don't judge the music on past experiences. I let my ears make the decision (not saying nobody else does this, but you know there are a lot of people that would like the Van Hagar stuff if it was under a different name than VH).

Personally I am a Van Hagar fan first!
Just read a cool article on this when they asked Sammy...

http://legacy.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=170842 why would DLR wanna sing any of the Sammy stuff. DLR can't play guitar as good as Sammy either......big deal. I have seen Sammy in concert alot over the years. From like 1978 to 1986 and one Chickenfoot show. He can sing.....he can play guitar... but he isn't the frontman that DLR is/was. If ya wanna make a more serious comparison....compare Dave from Y & T to Sammy. Sammy loses that one too. And I am a Sammy fan. Also Sammy is trying way too hard to "minimize" the current Van Halen thing. I heard him say that his VH fronted releases have outsold the DLR stuff. Lying about something so easy to disprove only makes him appear to be the opposite of the way he protrays himself to be. In the end I suppose, your old band doing arenas while you're playing casinos and theaters can rub that ol' ego the wrong way. _________________

Thing is though, when taking the Pop side of 1984 (title track, Jump, I'll Wait) into count, adding Dave's solo stuff such as Skyscraper and A Little Ain't Enough, I'm quite sure VH would had taken a lighter direction in the later 80's even had Dave remained in the band. The songs would have the Dave stamp on it, but it probably would still had been Poppier stuff than early VH. It's funny how many people seem to lay blame on Sammy for the direction, it's not like Dave's own records were heavy duty stuff either.

| They just don't sound like Van Halen with Sammy, they sound like Van Hagar...a TOTALLY different band. I don't think Dave would ever write a lyric as boring as "Summer nights and my RADIO!" How long did that take Sammy, 10 seconds? |

Yeah, cuz "I heard you missed us, we're back...I brought my pencil" is lyrical genius. _________________ FINAL SIGN

| Davis is tongue-in-cheek and very witty. Sammy is just bland.
I think Sammy is a midly-talented mostly-hack musician who would have been forgotten completely by now if it wasn't for his stint in Van Halen and singing on the first Montrose album.
I'm out, have fun listening to Chickensh!t.

when ya add "now give me somethin to write on man" puts it in the context of the song and the video. It was meant to be silly. _________________
