Great voice. Still my all time favorite version of the National Anthem.
It's absolutely fantastic! The National Anthem from the 1991 Super Bowl was on a greatest hits release, which I have. It didn't hurt that we as a country were at war with Iraq to amp up the emotions with what would have been regardless a great rendition of the song. Since that night down in Tampa, every star's performance is held to the standard of that performance.
When I was in the navy, they had a movie theater on base and that performance was played before every movie.

I had forgotten this. And you're right it was an incredible performance.

And here it is again. There are rumors that she lipsynched the actual performance but personally, I don't care; somewhere she had to create this fantastic vocal performance.

I remember when she first hit the scene in the 1980's, she had the squeakiest clean image of any pop star of the day, a real shame to see what life was like behind the manufactured facade.

She was like the anti-Madonna when she first came out back then. They even played up her mother's gospel singing to push the girl next door image. So sad the way it turned out. Beyond her singing, I always thought she did a pretty good job in The Bodyguard and The Preacher's Wife. Very talented. Also found her insanely attractive back then too.
My favorite Whitney Houston story was the time she told a bunch of fans waiting for her backstage looking for pictures that their tickets "only said seats" as the blow-off to them. Not a wise thing to say to fans (especially since her big stardom days were long gone by that point), but it always cracked me up picturing her snapping this at some unsuspecting people.
Hopefully she can find the peace she didn't find in this life.

imo... it's what you give back to this world, not what you come away from it with. she gave far much more than what she left with. nothing else matters to me.

Gimme a break. Apples and oranges. Know why the press only made a big deal about Whitney? Where's the album sales comparison in that list?
I'm not saying it's right but it is what it is.

I kind of felt the same way when Kurt Cobain died compared to Criss Oliva. But as you said Toho, it's because of album sales.

Yep. Same scenario IMO.
By way of comparison, why is anyone in the music industry mourned more in ANY media outlet more than a normal, average, nobody who dies from the same cause? Simple answer? The level of celebrity.

To put it in a mathematical formula:
The level of media attention is directly proportional to the level of celebrity of the deceased.

That picture above, i can understand, so many musicians who did write songs, performed them and died young didn't get the recognition they deserved (Fist in my mind of course is Dio) while Whitney Houston who became successful because of songwriters and mangers became big (and charts fiddeling ,there's the story of her album and Mötley Crue's Girls Girls Girls album) and her smurfing up her live while a lot of musicians died of tragic accidents (Randy Rhoads, Criss Oliva, Dio again...and so on)
Whiteny Houston's death get a lot of recognition here in Germany, her songs get played, it's just like with Michael Jackson. You have to admit, those were talented people, even with songwriters and managers, they wouldn't be as successful without talent. Houston became big in the 80's before ProTools, Autotune and Digital Editing was around and she had a great Voice, she was talented. While i don't grieve her death (she smurfed it up herself - and there's always a way out, Tina Turner is a good example) i have to say that she had a great voice and was really talented and it's loss, not only to the music world but more to her family, she was only 48, she died way, way to young.

I think people mourn musicians, singers, and anyone involved in music in disproportionate degree, is because music touches our lives in different ways, and maybe that artist reminded you of your first love, or what you were doing the first time you heard that song, and all sorts of memories can be associated with that song, and also when a musician dies, no matter if they were young or old, it reminds everybody of the vulnerability of life.
