One of my absolute favorites! yep. I really enjoy their albums but Anno just clicks on all levels for me. _________________

| You know, looking at my Riverside collection now, I never bought Rapid Eye Movement. I wanted the 2CD version but could never find it anywhere. Guess I forgot about it at some point. Need to rectify that.
Apparently I also do not own Second Life Syndrome. WTF?

Apparently I also do not own Second Life Syndrome. WTF? Sh*t. I didn't know there was a 2 disc version available. I got the single. Guess I'll have to keep an eye out for that one. Rapid Eye Movement Bonus disc track listing: 1.Behind The Eyelids - 6:17 2.Lucid Dream IV - 4:32 3.02 Panic Room (remix) - 3:23 4.Back To The River - 6:28 5.Rapid Eye Movement - 12:39 _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. You can get those songs elsewhere. I know some are on the 02 Panic Room EP, and the others are on a single, I think, which isn't the easiest thing to find. They also put out a limited edition live album on tour a while back, limited to 1,000. I typically don't care much about live albums, but when it's rare the collector in me starts twitching and drooling and is like, "WANT! NOW!"

| The more I think about it, Rapid Eye Movement may have been the first Riverside disc I purchased, so I was just happy to get anything by them for a decent price. For awhile there, it was hard to find their stuff and stay within my spending budget at the same time. Oh well. - Quote :

Are you talking about the Reality Dream live cd/dvd or is there a different one? I don't usually go out of my way to get live albums either, but if I came across one for these guys, I'd snap it up. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. | I have the Reality Dream DVD set, it's an excellent concert, only distracting thing are the fake video "artifacts" added to make it look like damaged film stock, etc. Thankfully the second disc which contains various live performances at festivals and on TV doesn't have any post-production video tinkering.
I ripped the audio from the DVD so I could play it in iTunes.

| Wow! So the reports they'd drastically changed are overstated but this is different though a logical step after Anno. Celebrity Touch is the immeadiate standout with a Deep Purple riff off Burn. Even hear some echoes of Tull faintly on a couple songs. | |

| The significant difference between Shrine and the prior albums are the instrumentation and production style used. Where the prior album was very "modern" with lots of studio vocal effects, keyboard samples and other staples of modern metal sound this album eschews most of that for a return to organic instrumentation and sound. Instead of synths & samples you've got piano, Hammond organ and electric piano primarily (with synths used sparingly), the guitar sound has been de-metalized as well going for a warmer analog tone. The return to vintage instrumentation is similar to what Steven Wilson, Opeth and other groups have been doing over the past few years...a trend that I am VERY happy about.
Where Anno Domini High Definition was an excellent "Prog Metal" album, Shrine is a beautifully realized "Prog Rock" album. The production is much improved as well, ADHD for all its polish is kind of a thin sounding record, Shrine is dynamic and immersive.
Despite the changes in texture they most definitely retain their core sound. There isn't a weak moment on the entire album and their maturity continues increase.
My favorite tracks are the mellower ones particularly "The Depth Of Self-Delusion", the beautiful ballad "We Got Used To Us" and the gloriously atmospheric "Deprived".

| I stopped in the local FYE last night just to see if they had the new album. They didn't, of course, which didn't really come as any surprise. Honestly, I would have been shocked if they did have it. Moreso if it wasn't outrageously overpriced. Oh well. Guess I'll be ordering it on-line. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. | Picked up the new album yesterday. I've listened to most of it, and love it. For some reason, it strongly reminded me of a collision between Anathema and Magellan. Weird. | |

Magellan is brilliant. so is anathema (at least the last two cds which I have heard) I like their first couple of albums too, when they were still a doom-death band. I like what I've heard of their newer stuff, too, though.

You should check out The Silent Enigma and Eternity for some of their heavier stuff; both are pretty good doom/death/gothic albums... sort of like My Dying Bride.

I've always grouped them together with them and Paradise Lost; although they're not 100% similar, they were from the same particular scene (and if i recall correctly, the same label as well)... and they've both influenced just about any doom-death band I can think of. Then again, there are a bunch of instances of where I just associate certain bands (in this case, Anathema) with the bands I'm looking into at the same time (My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost). I also did the same with Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers. They just kind of occupy the same head-space, if that makes any sense.
