Do the CD/DVD cleaning disc I see at the store really work? What is the best way to clean CD/DVD players?

I used to have one of those "CD cleaner" discs years 'n' years ago when i got my first CD player, cuz it seemed like the thing to do at the time. I used to use it once in a blue moon till I realized that I never really noticed any difference in sound quality before or after a 'cleaning' so I decided that it was B.S. and sh*tcanned it.

I never had one, but I agree that it's a waste of money. My take is that the companies that made the Cassette head/record/needle cleaners figured out that the CD was going to kill their business so they started making the CD Player Cleaner.

I used to use one a lot when I lived at home when younger as there was a lot of dust (from having an oil furnace/hot air pipes for one thing) so I could easily see it in my Sony Discman I had plugged into my old tapedeck ghetto blaster.

It also worked on my sister's stereo I used to copy discs onto cassettes . It had a slide out disc tray so you couldn't se the dust on the lens, but that was why CD's skipped.
They didn't skip after using the cleaner disc.
