My car CD player broke...Friday afternoon.....stunned... Sat there for 20 minutes trying to get it to work... It's like getting a flat tire, but worse.....the FM radio still works. It's like going from 80 proof whiskey.....to an O'dools fake beer. One thing, in that first hour, while shaking my head in disbelief... Was I repeatedly said, " now I know how ultra rare metal is ". Radio stations play the same thing as 30-40 years ago ! "Rebel Yell" was on....but couldn't crank it or get into it. "Jamie's Crying", "Mama Kin",.....same thing....couldn't blast it. Getting a new CD player put in, obviously, July 11th....140 bucks. And I got Blitzkrieg CD in the mail.... with the sole intent on blasting it on July 4th... Driving the car feels super way different now... I even said, out loud, to myself..... "I feel like my balls have been chopped off" Motorcyclists drive by me, can't match the power... Now I know, in my blood, that I'm a metal-head.

Get an mp3 player instead. Much fewer moving parts to break/malfunction. Or at least get a deck that has a USB port. I did that in my Eclipse about 7 or 8 years ago. The factory changer just locked up so I found a CD player with a USB port and had that installed. I don't think I used the CD part of that deck more than a handful of times for the remaining years I had that car. I liked creating my own "radio station" on a flash drive and playing that. "This is Toho radio! Where we play all the Toho hits. All Toho, all the time!"

Playing CDs in the car is a no-no for me. My CDs are meant to be kept for archival purposes and as a source to create copies from but never to actually be played. Even the car players with the soft bristles eventually scratch the CD in some way or another in time. I used to grab CDs when I forgot to charge my digital player, but now I just say no and patiently endure it, because no way in hell will I trash my CDs as long as I can manage it, especially ones that are pristine.

I'm in the same boat, the CD player in my truck crapped out a few months ago... there are other things in the truck that need attention before the CD player tho, so I went to Five Below and picked up one of those cheapy mini-speakers that you can plug into your MP3 player or cell phone. Then I ripped a bunch of my CDs to MP3s, loaded the tunes onto my phone, and I use that during my commutes to work. Every couple of weeks I delete a few albums from my phone and put some fresh ones in. It's a bit of an extra hassle but it'll do for now.

Mine died about 8 years ago. Was a Ford factory stereo with CD cassette combo! I was in business! Then it started keeping CD's. Eventually it never gave one back so I took it out and had to take it apart to get the CD back. Went to Best Buy and got a new Pioneer CD deck. It has a 3.5 jack for my iPod (I assume this is before Bluetooth or Bluetooth was just to expensive at the time). I still play CD's in my truck and recently it would not eject Rush "Permanent Waves". I thought "oh well, if it doesn't give it back at least if I am stuck listening to the same CD it's Rush". It eventually ejected and I put in "Exit Stage Left". I haven't tried to eject that one yet so we will see what happens. 80 % of the time I listen to my iPod via that 3.5 cord. And if I get bored with music I play Talk Is Jericho or some other podcast. I hate talk radio because it is political. On podcasts I get to hear what I wanna hear whether it be a wresting podcast, movie podcast (Bloody Popcorn!), old radio dramas from the 1940's or sports podcasts.
If the Pioneer deck keeps "Exit" I will probably go buy another deck and make sure the next one has Bluetooth and phone connectivity (I have an android and an iPod so it would have to connect to both but I believe most of the newer ones do).

The CD player in my car now refuses to eject CDs, so at some point I'm going to have to take it apart to get at the CD that's stuck in there.
So currently I'm using my iPod together with a portable speaker. It's not as convenient now having to take those around with me (and ensuring that the speaker is charged), but the benefit is that I now have access to more music. And since that's working well enough for me, I don't think I'm going to bother replacing the CD player.

I might have discovered the problem...heat...its been in the 90s... Maybe...the temp has played some havoc , because today it worked... Put in antifreeze , coolant.....it was very low.... And so I had the air conditioner blasting....but sound gets fuzzy.... It was boiling...popping car hood, hands were scorched... Fry egg on car day for sure... And wanted i to play " Christmas with devil" but that spinal tap cd still didn't read...wouldn't read... I bought a cd dvd cleaner for ten bucks....inserted it a few times... ....maybe laser reader....has some dust or hair particle or something.... At Walmart , they do have CD players for cars...80 to 100 bucks... They have a sign...easy to install...not sure about that...lol.... And my car passenger side speaker on door has blown... Cars a 2014 too - Played this cd going home...ahhh so refreshing

The cd player in my car is quite possibly on it's last legs. It's been pretty temperamental for awhile now, but I think this summer's unbearable heat has taken it's toll on the electronics. Something's fried. Most times, it won't read the disc, I get a "error cd" message and the cd ejects. On the rare occasion I can get one to play, when I pop it out, the disc itself is red-hot.
I do have an aux port that I can plug my MP3 player into, but that's a bit of a hassle unless a get a bigger player for storage. With any luck, I might have a new vehicle this fall anyway.

I love having a six disc changer in my Maxima. All CD's (with the exception of a few I use copies for) are fair game for the car and any other portable medium. That's why I bought them.

Just shopping around for a new vehicle, I'm noticing that cd players as a standard feature are going away faster than I thought.

So you can just load up a plain old flash drive with music and it will play through your car's audio system? I noticed the car I was looking at last night had a usb port.

Yep! It's great. I just pop the flash drive into the USB port and "Voila!" it's Toho radio! I bought a Nissan Murano in 2011 and it came with a 9 speaker Bose system (including a sub woofer under the spare tire that I didn't even realize was there until I had to clean spilled milk out of the car) and the USB port. I just put all the stuff I want to listen to on a regular flash drive, plug the sucker into the USB port, set the player to "Random All" and enjoy the tunes!

Hmmmm, this raises quite the conundrum for me. The car I'm looking at does NOT come with a cd player and I assume will have this flash-drive capability, amongst all the other bells & whistles that new technology has to offer (Bluetooth, satellite radio, etc.).
If I take that into account, I'm running out of places to play physical cds anymore. Traveling to and from work was probably one of the few places where playing a cd was my go-to option. Even at work, where I played cds through my computer has become an issue that may be going away.

Well, it's an end of an era. I purchased (well, leased) a new vehicle without a cd player. It feels weird.

I think you'll get used to it.
While my car has a CD player I only very rarely use it. 99% of the time I have one of my flash drives plugged in. It's probably not a coincidence that I can count the number of CDs I've bought in the last 5 years on both hands.

I suppose. I'm still bringing in cds to work with me, but that too might be coming to an end.
Over the summer, due to temporary heightened security issues, I wasn't carrying my regular metal cd case with me in and out of the office. I brought in my portable hard drive from home and left it there for the month of July. Now things are back to normal and it's back to business as usual. But I was getting used to having all those options at work instead of the usual 24 cds to pick from.

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. Thinking of that whenever I see a tiny scratch appear on a new CD brings me some relief and reminds me how it plays into my hoarding and OCD sickness. Actually, I just deleted 90% of the music on my external hard drive in the last day or two out of frustration, not just with collecting but with the volume of it. That and I stopped caring as much about music when I realized there was nothing to learn from it when I found out I was not going to become a musician or do anything related to music as a career. This, as well as a drastic change in my personal philosophy and goals in life helped me unload the burden of amassing such a huge collection among other things. That's the same deal with novels, and why I switched to writing non-fiction material rather than stories which I don't care for anymore.
Good thing there will always be other things to do if the CDs that I've still decided to keep go kapoot. They already just sit there in a corner on the shelf never being used in any regard. Such a waste. It has nothing to do with having a digital or physical collection because I remember when I had a 500GB harddrive of CDs ripped in FLAC and other rare downloads on the internet, I also started to get anxiety and weariness from browsing it. Less is more, for me. And people go on living without all that anyway. That hard drive went to the dogs, but so do most of these sorts of things in life. Now I'm trying to wonder what is the next step for me for where I am in enjoying music. I don't really like buying or downloading them anymore.

You can always have one installed There is a cd/cassette/tuner combo player being sold by one of the big names. It plays regular and mp3 cds and also has an input for an iPod or whatever player(though, you have to buy the cable) and is Double Din.
It doesn't have a detachable face which I like so I can bring it in with me..... because I have had my stereo stolen before.
