So I'll go with Opeth- Heritage Ghost was released in October, 2010 in Europe, but didn't get U.S. distribution till Jan. '11. So you can count it for this year if you want. I won't tell anyone.
The latest Foo Fighters is gonna be a top contender for me as well. Ah cool, well then, that's my pick

There's still a few albums I want to check out this year, but I'm pretty set on those four, and I don't see that changing too much by the end of the year. Been gravitating mostly towards traditional metal this year it seems.
If I had to pick a fifth it might be a toss up between the latest Blood Ceremony or Amebix - Sonic Mass.

| This year was off to a slow start, but MAN has it picked up as of late?!! And the quality of the releases are almost mind-boggeling to me. After a year or 2 without being surprised by much, several of the new CD's I bought latetly have done just that; been surprsingly good! _________________ | |

It's OK but I think the debut was quite a bit better. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| Been a good year for music so far and it's really hard for me to pick a standout album amongst all the great stuff that's been released. Current contenders for me would be:
Dream theater - a dramatic turn of events Symphony x - iconoclast Communic - the bottom deep Anthrax - worship him Iced earth - Dystopia Alice cooper - Welcome 2 my nightmare Morbid angel - illud divinum insanus Machine head - unto the locust UDO - rev raptor Amorphis - the beginning of times
And recent release, Th1rteen by megadeth
All stellar albums and depending on my mood they could all be album of the year.

| Saxon - "Call to Arms"
This is really quite something special. I don't think it has entirely caught on what Saxon have done with this album. Reaction has been extremely positive, but they have essentially re-created a NWOBHM classic in 2011. I think in a few years, or if Saxon ever hangs it up, this record will be hailed and recognized as one of the best heavy metal albums of the last 25 years.
I'm completely serious about this, too.
